Fellowship & Two Tower Extended Editions Coming to Theaters

In anticipation of the release of the final film in the series, New Line Cinema has decided to release the extended editions of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and THE TWO TOWERS. FELLOWSHIP will be released on December 5, 2003 in approximately 150 screens across North America followed by TWO TOWERS on December 12. Some theaters will present the two films back-to-back on December 8 and 15. Then, on December 16, participating theaters will show a one-time-only marathon of both Extended Editions followed by an 11 pm screening of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING. The official opening of THE RETURN OF THE KING will be December 17, 2003.

These films have undergone an incredible journey, from production to theatrical release around the world, to great success in their extended form on DVD, said Rolf Mittweg, New Line president/coo, worldwide distribution and marketing. The release of the third film affords us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give audiences a compelling new theatrical experience of Peter Jacksons sprawling vision for this trilogy.

The trilogy was co-written, directed and produced by Peter Jackson. The third film was produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Fran Walsh and Jackson. Philippa Boyens also participated on the screenplay, which is based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Founded in 1967, New Line Cinema has become a leading independent producer and distributor of theatrical motion pictures. The company, which is a subsidiary of AOL Time Warner Inc., operates several divisions including in-house theatrical distribution, marketing, home video, television, acquisitions, production, licensing and merchandising units.
