'Encanto’ Wins Big at the 2023 Grammy Awards

The colorful Colombia-inspired Disney animated film won Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, while composer Germaine Franco won Best Score Soundtrack and Lin-Manuel Miranda won Best Song Written for Visual Media for ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno.’

Once again, everyone is talking about Bruno! Disney’s Encanto was up for three awards yesterday for the 2023 Grammy Awards, and in a dazzling trifecta victory, took home an award in all three. The film was awarded Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, while composer Germaine Franco won the award for Best Score Soundtrack and Lin-Manuel Miranda nabbed Best Song Written for Visual Media for “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

Germaine Franco was previously nominated for an Oscar in 2022 for her work on Encanto, but her Grammy win this year has made her the first woman of color to win in this category. The Mexican American composer prevailed over Hans Zimmer for No Time to Die, Jonny Greenwood for The Power of the Dog, Michael Giacchino for The Batman, and Nicholas Britell for Succession: Season 3.

Miranda’s viral song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” also competed against some seriously tough competition, beating out Beyonce‘s “Be Alive” (King Richard), Taylor Swift‘s “Carolina” (Where the Crawdads Sing),  Lady Gaga‘s “Hold My Hand” (Top Gun: Maverick), Jessy Wilson’s “Keep Rising” (The Woman King), and Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “Nobody Like U” (Disney’s Turning Red).

While the album certainly earned its Visual Media accolades, Encanto and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was not nominated for Record or Song of the Year, which some consider a snub.

The Encanto album has sold an estimated 6 million copies worldwide and is streaming now on all major apps. Watch the magic of Encanto now on Disney+.
