Emilia Clarke Revealed by Mistake as Abigail Brand in ‘Secret Invasion’

The ‘Game of Thrones’ star’s role was accidentally acknowledged when the Marvel and Disney+ series’ official Tenor account tagged the character by name in a gif.

Surprise, surprise! Emilia Clarke’s role in the upcoming Marvel Studios series Secret Invasion has been steeped in mystery, until now. In an unlikely snafu, the official account for the project posted a gif of the Game of Thrones starlet on Tenor, which was tagged with “Abigail Brand.” While the tag has since been removed, and the public title of the gif now reads, “It’s the Beginning Emilia Clark GIF,” eagle-eyed fans were able to catch the mistake before it was erased.

For those not in the comic book know, Abigail Brand is the commander of S.W.O.R.D., first introduced in WandaVision, the agency tasked with protecting Earth from superpowered and extraterrestrial threats. S.W.O.R.D. is the agency counterpart of S.H.I.E.L.D., made famous in the Avengers films as well as the Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Secret Invasion follows the Earthly infiltration of the dastardly Skrulls, shape-shifting aliens who can perfectly impersonate anyone and hide in plain sight. In the original Marvel comic book arc, half-alien Brand acts as double agent to aid Nick Fury as they uncover the Skrull threat. The series, which Kevin Feige described as a crossover event, consists of six episodes and will lead into Armor Wars.

The series also stars Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Olivia Colman as Special Agent Sonya Falsworth, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Killian Scott as Fiz, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo.

Kyle Bradstreet will executive produce and pen the series.

Secret Invasion premieres on Disney+ in 2023.
