Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy reveals the upcoming feature will be set 15 years after the last events of the Skywalker Saga, and will be directed by Sharmeed Obaid Chinoy from a script by Steven Knight.
We did not see this one coming! In one of the most surprising reveals from the Star Wars Celebration in London this past Friday, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced the next Star Wars feature film will be set 15 years after the last events of the Skywalker Saga, and will star Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey.
Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) will direct from a script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders); the story follows the rebuilding of the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down. Damon Lindelof (HBO’s Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart), the original screenwriters of the project, exited in February.
“It’s just exciting,” Jon Favreau told Variety after the London panel. “I always find it really satisfying, encouraging when you have people who come through Star Wars, come back to Star Wars. It shows you how strong that community is and how big of a bond you develop. For Daisy to come back and be part of where this is going, I’m excited to see where all at what happens there.”
