da Vinci Debuts Stereoscopic 3-D Processing Powerhouse

At IBC2008, da Vinci unveiled a new version of the Resolve R-series digital enhancement suite designed expressly to meet the challenges of stereoscopic 3-D processing. Based on da Vinci's innovative C.O.R.E. processing technology, the Resolve R-3D enables colorists to exercise maximum creativity while performing in-context grading for the next-generation visual experience.

To date, the da Vinci 2K has been the most relied-upon color corrector for 3-D projects. But the future promises an exponentially increasing number of stereoscopic projects, and so the da Vinci team -- in collaboration with leading post-production studios -- has developed the R-3D specifically to meet the challenges of nonlinear grading in 3-D. The R-3D features an expanded, advanced toolset that automates and simplifies the copying of grades required for working in 3-D, making grading in 3-D truly interactive for the first time. Visitors to da Vinci's IBC stand, 7.31C, will have a chance to experience the R-3D in a private demo suite equipped with 3-D glasses.

"Improvements in technology are enabling stereoscopic 3-D content creation to take off in an exciting way that promises to have a profound influence on the industry as a whole," said Dean Lyon, director of marketing at da Vinci. "Recognizing this, all the major studios have built content divisions around stereoscopic projects, and da Vinci customers will be able to respond. No one has more experience with 3-D color grading and image enhancement than we do, so it is only natural that da Vinci could develop an imaging suite with the targeted power and features of the R-3D."

The da Vinci R-3D suite offers flexible, real-time throughput of nonlinear images in film, television, and commercial applications. The Resolve R-series is based on da Vinci's advanced new processing engine, C.O.R.E. (CUDA Optimized Resolve Engine). With the introduction of C.O.R.E., da Vinci has leveraged the power and efficiency of GPUs not merely for graphics display, but also for processing power, thus surmounting the complex, computation-intensive challenges inherent in color finishing.

In addition to the R-3D, new additions to the Resolve R-series line unveiled at IBC2008 include the R-100, a feature-packed cost-effective suite that is fully scalable and upgradable; and the R-4K, a real-time, 4K interactive color grading solution.
