Crunchyroll Drops New Trailer, Release Date for ‘NieR: Automata Ver1.1a’

The anime series based on Square Enix and Platinum Games’ role-playing game, featuring the battle between androids and machines in a post-apocalyptic Earth, is set to release January 7.

A new trailer for NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a, Crunchyroll’s upcoming anime series adapted from Square Enix and Platinum Games’ action role-playing game NieR:Automata, has premiered alongside an official release date announcement. Watch all the awesome android action on YouTube now: 

The trailer, entitled Promotion File 008, features 2B (voiced by Yui Ishikawa) and 9S (voiced by Natsuki Hanae) kicking some major machine butt. The cast also includes Chiaki Kano as Commander, Keiko Isobe as Operator 6O, Mary Hatsumi as Operator 21O, Hiroki Yasumoto as Pod 042, and Kaoru Akiyama as Pod 153.

Square Enix states the game NieR:Automata, which the anime will closely follow, “tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines.  Humanity has been driven from the Earth by mechanical beings from another world. In a final effort to take back the planet, the human resistance sends a force of android soldiers to destroy the invaders. Now, a war between machines and androids rages on... a war that could soon unveil a long-forgotten truth of the world.”

For those that can’t wait until January, the anime series’ official Twitter account revealed, “A special program releasing new information about NieR: Automata Ver1.1a will be distributed on the Aniplex YouTube channel, December 28th at 8:00PM JST. Presenters include Yui Ishikawa, Natsuki Hanae, Kaoru Akiyama, Yosuke Saito, and Shota Fujii.

Ryouji Masuyama (The Secret World of Arrietty) is set to direct the adaptation, with A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online) producing.  Jun Nakai will serve as chief animation director and character designer, while musical composition will be performed by MONACA.
