Chaos Group Labs Releases Free GPU Rendering Guide

New GPU rendering guide from the makers of V-Ray answers common hardware questions and explores myths, trends and the future of rendering technology.

SOFIA, BULGARIA -- Chaos Group Labs has announced the release of a free GPU Rendering Guide that offers an in-depth look at key trends, best practices, and future breakthroughs. Highlighting the pros and cons of CPU and GPU computing, along with V-Ray GPU rendering tips, the guide is a practical and comprehensive resource for artists and designers.

The 61-page guide features over eight years of research and insights gained while developing GPU rendering capabilities in V-Ray, one of the only production renderers to be optimized for both CPUs and GPUs. Contributors include: Chaos Group Labs Director, Christopher Nichols and Chaos Group Lead GPU Developer, Blagovest Taskov.

The rise in GPU rendering comes at a time when 3D artists are asked to produce content faster than ever before. Additional demands for improved quality, higher frame rates, and resolutions of up to 18K in VR, have left artists looking for any computational boost they can get. Advancements in high-bandwidth memory, lower latency, and faster chips could help solve these problems. The guide investigates the options.

Additional Topics Include:

  • Moore’s Law and the jump to 14nm chips
  • How to select the right GPU

  • Professional vs. gaming GPUs
  • What to expect in next generation GPUs

“It’s exciting to see GPU rendering enter the mainstream, and we know artists still have a lot of questions,” remarked Blagovest Taskov, Lead GPU Developer at Chaos Group. “This guide was created to give them the facts, so when they look to the future, they can make informed decisions about their pipelines.”

The GPU Rendering Guide can be downloaded now on the Chaos Group Lab’s website.
