CG Society Announces 2013 Mari Texture Challenge

CG Society and The Foundry ask artists to bring a sci-fi hover bike 3D model by the famous designer Harald Belker to life for the 2013 Mari Texture Challenge.

The Foundry and CGSociety are looking for the world's best MARI artist.

The Foundry, makers of MARI, the 3D digital paint tool, has supplied CGSociety with a sci-fi hover bike 3D model by the famous designer Harald Belker (his vehicle and prop designs have appeared in countless films, including Total Recall, Oblivion and the Batmobile in Batman & Robin). The model will be freely given to the World’s texture artists, so they can bring it to life using MARI.

The artwork will be judged on the composition, attention to detail and general awesomeness. The Foundry and CGSociety want to see textures that tell a story. They will be looking for detailed, realistic textures in a lookdev-ready setup (a minimum of color, bump and spec maps for each shader). Details which make the textures more evocative will get bonus points too. Artists will receive extra kudos for submitting animated textures, turntables, renderable scenes (MODO, Maya and 3ds Max etc.) and showcasing their work in progress on CGTalk.

The competition will be judged by Image Engine’s Justin Holt, Scott Metzger, Daniele Orsetti, Jack Greasley, MARI’s Product Manager and CG Talk’s chief moderator and host Leigh van der Byl. Also, Mr. Harald Belker himself will be taking part in judging this competition.

Almost $30,000 of prizes from HP, NVIDIA, The Foundry and more, are on offer.

Haven’t got MARI? Never used it before? The Foundry are offering a trial for the duration of the challenge, plenty of time to get to grips with this incredibly powerful tool.

The MARI Texture Challenge 2013 starts 1 October, with a December 15 deadline. Join in the fun here.
