Cast Away Holds Strong At The International Box Office

CAST AWAY is still holding strong at the international box office. In Germany, the desert island adventure rounded up another $3.73 million, escalating its cume to $21.46 million. VERTICAL LIMIT climbed into second with a gross of $1.84 million, raising its German cume to $4.34 million. In third, BEDAZZLED seduced $1.4 million, bringing its German cume to $4.49 million. THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE made its German nod in fourth with a gross of $663,408. At #8, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON collected $477,415, pushing its German cume to $2.35 million. Rounding out the top ten, UNBREAKABLE added $293,258 to its German cume of $12.82 million. In Mexico, CAST AWAY debuted in first place with ticket-take of $2.3 million. VERTICAL LIMIT descended into second with a gross of $1.6 million, advancing its Mexican cume to $7.36 million. In fourth, still strong after six weeks in Mexico, CHICKEN RUN raced in with an additional $441,122, lifting its cume to $5.55 million. At #7, BEDAZZLED bewitched another $176,579, bringing its Mexican cume to $7.09 million. 102 DALMATIANS was spotted in eighth place with a gross of $128,847, elevating its Mexican cume to $4.91 million. THE 6TH DAY cloned $109,876 in ninth place, raising its Mexican cume to $4.25 million. Closing out the Mexican top ten, LITTLE NICKY added $90,529 to its Mexican cume of $2.39 million. In Australia, CAST AWAY remained in first for the third straight week, grossing another $1.69 million, elevating its cume to $8.51 million. In fifth, BEDAZZLED slithered in with $654,764, increasing its Australian cume to $1.81 million. At #6, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON stole $648,734, advancing its Australian cume to $2.57 million. In ninth, THE 6TH DAY muscled in another $314,864, increasing its Australian cume to $2.06 million. In Spain, CAST AWAY held off the debut of VERTICAL LIMIT to retain the top spot with a gross of $1.64 million, raising its cume to $5.86 million. Placing second, VERTICAL volleyed $1.63 million. In fourth, UNBREAKABLE secured $853,910, bringing its Spanish cume to $7.86 million. BEDAZZLED danced into sixth with a ticket-take of $802,256, growing its cume to $3.29 million. In seventh, BLESS THE CHILD possessed $715,797, lifting its Spanish cume to $1.44 million. In Hong Kong, CAST AWAY floated in another $892,729 at #1, blooming its total to $1.92 million. At #3, VERTICAL LIMIT launched in another $383,867, lifting its Hong Kong cume to $2.03 million. At #5, 102 DALMATIANS collared $278,565, increasing its Hong Kong cume to $1.74 million. POCKET MONSTERS REVELATION (i.e. POKEMON 2000) collected $35,436, pushing its Hong Kong total to $465,233. Finishing off the Hong Kong top ten, CROUCHING TIGER added $20,138 to its $1.99 million cume. In the U.K., with the debut of Mel Gibson's live-action comedy WHAT WOMEN WANT taking #1, CAST AWAY dropped to second, grossing $2.24 million, thereby lifting its cume to $16.84 million. In third, TRAFFIC, which was based on a British TV mini-series, smuggled in another $2.12 million, raising its U.K. cume to $4.91 million. At #4, VERTICAL LIMIT rescued $1.46 million, raising its U.K. cume to $7.56 million. In fifth, CROUCHING TIGER added $1.12 million to its record setting U.K. cume of $7.03 million. 102 DALMATIANS barked up $556,788 in seventh, bringing its U.K. cume to $13.08 million. UNBREAKABLE crashed into eighth with a gross of $554,997, raising its U.K. total to $15.89 million. In Italy, CAST AWAY also claimed the second spot behind the debut of live-action comedy MEET THE PARENTS by grossing $1.63 million, thus advancing its cume to $12.09 million. In fifth, 102 DALMATIANS fetched $804,757, bringing its Italian total to $4.2 million. CROUCHING TIGER took the sixth slot in its Italian premiere with a ticket-take of $614,527. In seventh, THE 6TH DAY added $462,186 to its $1.41 million Italian cume. In Japan, the French thriller, THE CRIMSON RIVERS flowed into a first place debut with a gross of $3.57 million. VERTICAL LIMIT scaled to sixth, grossing $1.55 million, lifting its Japanese cume to $32.37 million. At #7, DINOSAUR stomped in another $1.1 million, raising its Japanese cume to $40.96 million. THIRTEEN DAYS sailed into eighth, with a ticket-take of $676,315, pushing its Japanese cume to $12.9 million. In Sweden, VERTICAL LIMIT held tightly to third, grossing $224,096, thus growing its cume to $685,994. Likewise clinging to fourth, CAST AWAY claimed $214,405, raising its Swedish total to $1.94 million. Making its Swedish premiere in fifth, BEDAZZLED racked in $205,708. In sixth, CROUCHING TIGER tagged another $124,711, lifting its Swedish cume to $882,272. 102 DALMATIANS leashed $54,771 in ninth, bringing its Swedish cume to $1.71 million. Closing out the Swedish top ten, SNATCH added $51,789 to its $1.08 million total. In its French debut, 102 DALMATIANS scampered into third, with a gross of $3.08 million. CAST AWAY sunk to fourth in France, grossing $1.45 million, advancing its cume to $6.3 million. At #7, UNBREAKABLE rescued $561,137, growing its French cume to $17.01 million. CHICKEN RUN flew into ninth, grossing $393,806, thereby lifting its French cume to $14.39 million. In South Africa, the reissue of THE EXORCIST placed third, scaring up yet another $133,924 and pushing its cume to $368,252. In fourth, VERTICAL LIMIT landed $107,081, raising its South African cume to $975,441. At #5, ALMOST FAMOUS made a lackluster South African premiere with a ticket-take of $51,804. Rounding out the South African top ten, CHARLIE'S ANGELS added $23,344 to its $1.86 million cume. In Canada, TRAFFIC raced into third with a gross of $712,700, pushing its cume to $5.7 million. At #4, SNATCH scored $684,715, elevating its Canadian cume to $2.67 million. CAST AWAY docked into fifth, with a gross of $626,067, escalating its Canadian total to $13.83 million.
