After finishing third on Friday, Universal’s Safe House edged past The Vow and the Ghost Rider sequel to claim first place for the first three days of Presidents Day Weekend. The Denzel Washington-Ryan Reynolds action film Safe House brought in $24 million, earning a total of $78.3 million over its 10-day run, while romantic drama The Vow, starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, brought in $23.6 million for a total of $85.5 million.
Sony's Ghost Rider sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, grossed $22 million for the three-day weekend to come in number three.
New Line's sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island held fourth place with $20.1 million for the three-day weekend, bringing its 10-day domestic total to $53.2 million.
Fox’s This Means War opened in fifth place for the three-day weekend, grossing an estimated $17.6 million. Including $1.6 million in Valentine's Day previews, the film's domestic total through Sunday was $19.2 million.
The fourth new film of the weekend was Disney's family film The Secret World of Arrietty, from acclaimed Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli. Secret Life of Arrietty came in at ninth place, grossing $6.4 million for the three-day weekend with a projected four-day gross of $8 million.
