Bowen Yang, Brett Goldstein Board Animated ‘Garfield’ Feature

The Alcon Entertainment CG film starring Chris Pratt as the eponymous orange feline welcomes the ‘SNL’ and ‘Ted Lasso’ stars to a growing cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham, Cecily Strong, and Ving Rhames.

Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) are the latest stars to join the impressive cast of Garfield, the upcoming CG animated feature directed by Mark Dindal (The Emperor’s New Groove, Chicken Little). Previously announced Chris Pratt (The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Jurassic World) will voice the eponymous orange feline, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham, Cecily Strong and Ving Rhames. The screenplay is penned by David Reynolds (Finding Nemo), with Paul Kaplan (George Lopez) and Mark Torgove (Raising Hope).

Although the franchise has remained popular since it first appeared in newspaper comic sections in 1978, Garfield only touts two live action/CGI feature films, and the franchise has remained off the big screen since the second film, A Tale of Two Kitties, premiered in 2006. The upcoming Alcon Entertainment offering will be the first fully animated theatrical project starring the lasagna-obsessed kitty.

Alcon acquired the Garfield rights from comic strip creator Jim Davis, who will serve as an executive producer on the film. John Cohen (Despicable Me) and Steven P. Wegner (Dolphin Tale 2) will produce along with Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Amuse’s Bridget McMeel will also executive produce with Davis. DNEG Animation will animate and produce the film, with CEO Namit Malhotra and President Tom Jacomb serving as producers.

Garfield is set to prance into theaters May 24, 2024.
