ROCKNROLLA on DVD and Blu-ray

"I own this town." But owning is getting expensive for old-school London gangster Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson). A wealthier foreign mob is moving in with a riverfront property swindle. A small-timer (Gerard Butler) and his crew think they can play both sides and become big time. Now add a hard-as-ice accountant (Thandie Newton), a rocker playing dead to boost sales, wannabe music moguls (Jeremy Piven and Chris Bridges), a missing painting and a mad mosh of money and muscle, and you've got this funny, smash-mouth smackdown of sexthugs&rocknroll from writer/director Guy Ritchie (LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS and SNATCH).

Keeping the work on the film local, Ritchie turned to London-based Rushes, tapping the company's head of film and TV, Jonathan Privett, to supervise the work.

"Our sister company, Ascent 142, were already in conversation about the digital intermediate for the film, and were called to see if anyone could provide advice for a vfx shot, ironically filming within walking distance," says Privett. "As one of Rushes vfx supervisors and head of film and TV, I walked over to the location and got involved."

In keeping with Ritchie's style, Privett says the visual effects were meant to be as minimal and invisible as possible. "As much as possible was done in camera," he says. "As a director, Guy was very much focused on the performances and feel of the film."

Most of the challenges were logistical rather than technical. "Due to the commitments of the actors a large amount of in-car green screen shots were required because no time was available to do a low-loader shoot," adds Privett. Such shots may seem simple, but present more than their fair share of challenges. "I have always thought that these seemingly simple shots are difficult to make truly convincing in a studio environment," continues Privett.

To get that level of realism, the cars were mounted on turntables to get some motion into the foreground of the shots. They also took extra time to allow director of photography David Higgs to light the greenscreen shots.

ZODIAC Director's Cut on Blu-ray

Based on the true story of the notorious serial killer and the intense manhunt he inspired, ZODIAC, from Paramount Home Ent., is a superbly crafted thriller form the director of SE7EN and PANIC ROOM. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Chloe Sevigny, ZODIAC is a searing and singularly haunting examination of twin obsessions: one man's desire to kill and another's quest for the truth.

A 2007 theatrical release, ZODIAC features vfx by Digital Domain, Mar Vista Ventures, Matte World Digital and Ollin Studio.

Matte World Digital and visual effects supervisor Craig Barron were called in to create more than 40 establishing shots of San Francisco as it looked during that tumultuous era. Several of these shots, including flyovers, required building complete 3D environments. Parallel to this effort, Digital Domain was asked to focus on the exact recreation of the actual murders. The team was led by visual effects supervisor Eric Barba, vfx producer Lisa Beroud, CG supervisor Karl Denham, compositing supervisor Janelle Croshaw and matte painting supervisor Wei Zheng.

"We had to reproduce very precisely the way the killings occurred, and the environments in which they took place," Barba says. "We did more than 100 shots, but most of them will go unnoticed by the viewers. The bulk of our work, in terms of man-hours, involved set extensions. We recreated specific areas in San Francisco as they looked [at that time]. David was very adamant that everything looked exactly as it was at the time the murders occurred. He wanted to shoot his movie as if a camera had really been there. To start with, he decided that, whenever possible, we would shoot the plates at the actual location of each murder. Obviously, the environments had changed quite a bit in the last 35 years, so that's where we came in, to digitally bring them back to their original state."

The director's cut adds 7 more minutes of footage, including a minute of black screen with music and news clips to chronicle a four-year passage of time. As for the bonus features, which are all in HD, the highlights are "ZODIAC Deciphered," a nearly hour-long doc about the making of the production; "The Visual Effects of ZODIAC," a 15-minute look at the vfx, including recreating vintage San Francisco 30+ years ago, and having to recreate the murder in Presidio Heights on a stage in Downey and matching it with minimal location footage; "Previsualization," which breaks down CG sequences with split screen; "This is the Zodiac Speaking," which captures the essence of the real crimes in a lot of detail; and "Prime Suspect: His Name Was Arthur Leigh Allen, which offers interviews with two friends and cops.
