The new series, based on Chinese author Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning sci-fi novels about humanity’s first contact with an alien race, debuts December 3; David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ live-action version will debut on Netflix next year.
Bilibili, the Chinese video sharing website and leading platform for Chinese anime series, announced the highly anticipated animated series The Three-Body Problem, based on Liu Cixin’s science fiction novels, is set for release December 3. The original trailer, released in 2019, has amassed over 3 million followers and 40 million views.
Chinese sci-fi IP developer Three-Body Universe and animation studio YHKT Entertainment are co-producing the series.
In “The Three-Body Problem,” the first book in Liu’s Hugo Award-winning trilogy, humanity contacts an alien race and prepares for their arrival, splitting into camps that either plan on welcoming and aiding the superior beings take over their planet, or to fight off the invasion.
“I am excited to announce that The Three-Body Problem animated series will debut on Bilibili,” said Liu. “Animation, like science fiction, is the art of imagination. Imagination is humanity's most powerful force. I believe in the world of animation, a sci-fi story like The Three-Body Problem can really come alive.”
The animated series is not the only adaptation of Liu’s trilogy in the works. A live-action series at Netflix written and produced by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) and Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy, True Blood), first announced with some controversy in 2020, has, according to the streamer, wrapped filming and will debut in 2023.
