Besson's Heart to Sneak Peek at Annecy

The 50th Annecy Int'l Animation Festival will show the first images from Luc Besson's pet project THE MECHANICS OF THE HEART, reports VARIETY. The festival will run from June 7-14.

The animated film is set in 19th century Scotland and follows a man who was given a clock as a heart at birth. Mathias Malzieu, who wrote the novel on which the film is based, is co-directing with Stephane Berla. Malzieu of the band Dionysos also composed the score. Besson is producing with his wife Virginie Silla-Besson via his EuropaCorp.

The film will be shown as part of the Work in Progress section along with Folimage's 2D thriller UNE VIE DE CHAT and Patrice Leconte's musical LE MAGASIN DES SUICIDES.

While the full lineup has not been released, some big titles have been revealed. Films include Sylvain Chomet's Jacques Tati homage THE ILLUSIONIST, SHREK FOREVER AFTER, Wes Anderson's FANTASTIC MR. FOX and Gabor Csupo's IMMIGRANTS.

Special retrospectives will center on Argentinean animation, Juan Pablo Zaramella and Oscar Grillo.
