‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ and Zoe Saldaña Hit Major Box Office Milestone

The visually stunning sequel from James Cameron becomes the sixth film in history to earn over $2 billion in global sales, his third, and the star’s fourth.

Avatar: The Way of Water has earned over $2 billion in global sales after only six weeks of release. This marks the sixth film, and director James Cameron’s third, to earn the honor. The exclusive Couple Billionaire’s Club also includes Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Titanic.

While Cameron is the only director to claim three “top grossing” badges, he is not the only creative that can do so.  Zoe Saldaña, star of both the Avatar films as well as Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War is the only actor tied to a total of four films earning over $2 billion. We hope she gets royalties!

In a spot of “putting it into the Universe,” Cameron previously divulged Way of Water needed to become one of the top-grossing movies in history just to break even on expenses. Variety reports that analysts have pinpointed $1.5 billion as the breakeven point, which already provides the film with a healthy profit. Only time will tell if Way of Water surpasses its predecessor as biggest earner of all time, with $2.9 billion in global earnings.

In addition to informal titles, the film has been nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. VFX were created by Wētā FX and ILM, with Joe Letteri acting as Production VFX Supervisor.

Avatar: The Way of Water opened in theaters in mid-December, and tickets are still available. Viewers can expect the film to stream on Disney+ in the future.
