‘Avatar 3’ Casts Leader of the ‘Ash People’

‘Game of Thrones’ actress Oona Chaplin will portray the villainous head of the fiery Na’vi tribe in the franchise’s third film, according to producer Jon Landau.

Avatar franchise producer Jon Landau recently sat down with Empire to reveal exclusive details of what to expect from the upcoming Avatar films. While confirming an “aggressive, volcanic race” of Na’vi will be the focus of the next installment, Landau also revealed Game of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin (remember the infamous Red Wedding?) will portray the villainous leader Varang of the fiery ‘Ash People.’ From red wedding to red hot warriors, Chaplin sure knows how to choose exciting, and infamous, roles.

Of the Ash People, Landau explained, “There are good humans and there are bad humans. It’s the same thing on the Na’vi side. Oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we aren’t aware of.”

Scenes from Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 have already been filmed, so we could get a first look at Chaplin’s Varang soon. Landau also revealed that there will be a “big time jump” for Avatar 4, with Avatar 5 partially set on an overpopulated and resource depleted Earth. “[…] we don’t want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going,” the producer explained of the fifth installment. “The films are also about the idea that we can change course.”

With the enormous success of both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, it seems nothing will get in the way of Cameron and Landau’s plan and vision for the franchise.

Avatar: The Way of Water continues to play in theaters nationwide.
