Animation Lessons From Beyond Via VanArts

In what may be a first of its kind, this April VanArts (Vancouver Institute of Media Arts) will launch a series of online lessons and lectures featuring the late Academy-Award winning animator Lee Mishkin. This rare and recently edited collection, THE LEE MISHKIN LECTURE SERIES, features talks and instruction by the founding director of VanArts Classical Animation Program. The lectures cover a wide range of fundamental animation principles for 2D or 3D professionals. Lectures can be viewed on a pay-per-view basis through the VanArts Website, and will also be available as a DVD or VHS box set. A second online offer will be the INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL ANIMATION, a series of lessons developed by Mishkin and senior faculty at VanArts, in consultation with the University of British Columbia, Distance Education & Technology Unit. The course is structured so that students develop the ability to create drawings that are living, breathing characters behaving in distinctly personalized ways on screen. The Bouncing Ball lesson is the first lesson available with more to be released on a regular basis throughout the year. These lessons will cover the basic principles of Classical Animation including the bouncing ball, inbetweening, sack jump, character design, action analysis and the walk cycle.
