Animafest PRO Schedules Master Classes, Lectures, Discussions

Robert Morgan, Kim Keukeleire and Pedro Rivero to teach master classes during the event, part of Animafest Zagreb, running June 4-9.

ZAGREB, CROATIA -- Animafest PRO -- the section part of the World Festival of Animated Film’s program for film industry professionals and interested members of the public -- has added master classes from Robert Morgan, Kim Keukeleire and Pedro Rivero to its schedule.

Set during Animafest Zagreb, from June 4-9 in Zagreb, Croatia, the PRO program also will include presentations for Amulet Studio’s &Black&White animated series; European pitching event CEE Animation; stop-motion video game titles Harold Halibut and Vokabulantis; lectures by Nicholas Grivel and the Animafest Scanner V international symposium.

All lectures and presentations will take place at Tuškanac, except for &Black&White, which will be presented at the French Institute Médiathèque. Animafest Scanner will take place at the Balassi Institute.

This year’s master classes play host to three world-renowned lecturers:

  • Robert Morgan (The Cat with Hands, The Separation, Bobby Yeah) is a British artist and claymation master. His remarkably gruesome body of work, which occupies a special place in contemporary animation, will be the subject of his lecture, On Making Films and More. It complements the Morgan's Organs exhibition of sketches, drawings, and puppet parts from his works at the ULUPUH Gallery.
  • Kim Keukeleire is a Belgian animator specialized in stop-motion animation. She has worked on Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs, as well as Tim Burton's Frankenweenie and My Life as a Zucchini. She will talk about stop-motion animation of characters in Isle of Dogs.
  • Pedro Rivero, winner of Spain’s Goya national film award, is best known as screenwriter and director of Birdboy, created with Alberto Vázquez. Rivero will talk about screenwriting and storytelling in animated film. He also will be available for individual consultation. Those interested may apply by email.

Animafest PRO also will feature a talk from Vimeo curator Meghan Oretsky, who will offer an insider's perspective on the process of curating the streaming site’s daily Vimeo Staff Pick showcase and reveal what’s necessary for a film to stand out to the curating team.

CEE Animation is an initiative for connecting animation professionals and development of animation projects from Eastern Europe. The initiative will be presented by producer Matija Šturm and will include a presentation of two CEE Animation projects: Crystal Raiders by Arsen Anton Ostojić and Unwanted by Kolja Saksida.

Game designers Onat Hekimoglu and Ole Tillmann, authors of the Harold Halibut project, and Johan Oettinger, author of Vokabulantis, will talk about stop-motion in videogames.

Nicholas Grivel, a literary agent for comics and graphic novels, as well as lecturer and animation scout, will hold a lecture on building an online portfolio, visibility in the animation industry, and managing a career in animation. Grivel also will be available for individual consultation. Those interested may apply by email.

Amulet Studio will present the animated series &Black&White by Darko Bakliža.

And the Animafest Scanner V international symposium will take place June 5-6 June, with the aim of creating a synergy of theoretical and practical discourses, enabling the conference and exchange of ideas among animation filmmakers and scholars. This year's keynote speaker is the recipient of the Animafest 2018 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animation Studies, Paul Wells, one of the leading experts in the field of contemporary animation studies. Other topics of discussion include the relationship between animation and horror, character design in animated film, the relationship between animation and sports, and the use of animation beyond the realm of animated film.

Admission to all Animafest PRO events is free.
