Espoo, Finland - March 22, 2011 - Rovio today announced the availability of their latest game, Angry Birds Rio, on iOS, Mac and Android platforms. Starting today, the game can be downloaded from the App Store for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, from the Mac App Store for Mac computers, and for Android devices in the Amazon Appstore. The game was developed in conjunction with Twentieth Century Fox, and features the animated stars of the studio’s upcoming film, RIO, which debuts in theaters on April 15. The game was officially launched in Rio de Janeiro at the world premiere of RIO.
Angry Birds Rio will also be available in the Ovi Store for Symbian^3 smartphones and the Palm App Catalog for Palm WebOS devices on April 8.
Angry Birds Rio features two episodes and 60 levels, and new episodic updates based on the motion picture RIO will be provided throughout the year. New playable characters, new achievements and unlockable secrets are also included.
“Angry Birds Rio is the most exciting thing to happen to Angry Birds so far,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “We are glad to bring exciting new gameplay elements and a fresh, thrilling new Angry Birds experience to all our fans worldwide.”
In Angry Birds Rio, animal smugglers have kidnapped the Angry Birds and taken them to magical city of Rio, where they escape their captors and set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel – two rare macaws and the stars of the upcoming Fox motion picture, RIO. Angry Birds Rio pairs the gameplay of the original game with unique twists based on the highly-anticipated film.
“Rovio has once again taken gaming in the app environment to an entirely new level with Angry Birds Rio,” said Peter Levinsohn, president of new media and digital distribution for Twentieth Century Fox. “Not only will consumers love the game, but it will also serve as a fun and interactive introduction to some of the great characters they’ll meet in RIO.”
From the makers of the hit Ice Age series, RIO is a comedy-adventure about taking a walk on the wild side. Blu is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, living a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda in the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota. Blu and Linda think he’s the last of his kind, but when they learn about another Macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the faraway and exotic land to find Jewel, Blu’s female counterpart.
Rovio also released a new mashup video starring Angry Birds and Nigel, the evil cockatoo from Rio:
