AFI Silver Theatre to Present a Tribute to George Lucas

To honor the artistry of director George Lucas, AFI's 33rd Life Achievement Award recipient, AFI Silver Theatre will present a special tribute to George Lucas hosted by the Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore, Her Excellency Chan Heng Chee, on June 29, 2005, in Silver Spring, Maryland.

AFI Silver Theatre's homage includes an invitation-only special reception hosted by Ambassador Chan and a special screening of selected clips from AFI's 33rd Life Achievement Award tribute, to be broadcast June 20 on USA Network. AFI Silver's Tribute will end with a presentation of the director's first feature film, THX 1138.

"George Lucas has not only changed filmmaking and the film industry, he has done so in multiple ways and on multiple levels," said Murray Horwitz, director of AFI Silver Theatre. "AFI Silver is thrilled to be part of AFI's Life Achievement Award to this quintessentially American artist."

The Republic of Singapore, soon-to-be home to Lucasfilm's first overseas animation studio and production house, joins AFI Silver's Tribute to George Lucas.

"We are pleased to be able to host this tribute to George Lucas. Singapore believes in the importance of a robust Intellectual Property Rights regime as this will contribute toward a more vibrant creative industry scene in Singapore and, in turn, enable creative geniuses like Lucas to market their ideas in the Asia Pacific region," said Singapore Ambassador Chan Heng Chee.

Sponsors of AFI Silver's June 29 Tribute to George Lucas include The Boeing Co., Creative Technology Ltd., Singapore Economic Development Board, Exxon Mobil Corp., Singapore Airlines and Vision Technologies Systems Inc. Invited guests include members of the political and entertainment communities. The buffet reception begins at 6:30 pm; the special screenings at 8:00 pm.

The tribute launches a two-week showcase of the director's esteemed body of prior work-rarely presented in entirety on the big screen-including the previous five STAR WARS films (otherwise embargoed during the release of STAR WARS: EPISODE III THE REVENGE OF THE SITH), the INDIANA JONES trilogy, AMERICAN GRAFFITI and THX 1138. The showcase runs July 1 through 14, with all five pre-SITH STAR WARS films featured in AFI Silver Theatre's 4th of July weekend program.

AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is located at 8633 Colesville Road in Silver Spring, Maryland.
