ACE Canada’s ‘Ostinato’ to Debut at Spark Animation 2023

The animated short’s creative team, part of the immersive career excel-erator program, along with Netflix and Women in Animation Vancouver, will present their film’s world premiere, including a Q&A and panel, at the festival, which runs November 13 – December 31.

Netflix and Women in Animation Vancouver (WIA) will present the world premiere of Ostinato, the latest animated short film from ACE Canada, produced with the support of the Canada Media Fund, Creative BC, and Telefilm Canada. The film debuts with the entire team in attendance at the Oscar-accredited Spark Animation festival in Vancouver:

November 10 at 6:30 pm:

  • Mothers of an Artform + Q&A - Venue: Roundhouse Performance Theatre

November 11 at 4:00 pm - Presented by WIA Vancouver:

  • “Panel: Meet the Filmmakers: 8 Women of Ace 3's Short Film Ostinato” - Venue: Roundhouse · Room B

Inspired by writer Sunita Balsara’s experience with tinnitus, Ostinato follows Nuha, a composer who sees the world as a vibrant soundscape. She is having the best and gentlest kind of morning when her playing is interrupted by a mysterious Tone. As she struggles to confine and banish it, the Tone grows larger and louder, drowning out her music. Only when Nuha stops fighting does she discover a way to incorporate the Tone into her music and life.

The creative team behind Ostinato will attend and share their experiences from making the films. Artists from BC, Quebec, and Ontario include composer Amanda Cawley (Fireman Sam); story supervisor Anna Bohac (Carmen Sandiego); editor Isabel Ribeiro (HitPig); assistant art director May-Yun Ong (Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie); animation director Molly Lacoursière (Pinecone & Pony); director Sonia Furier (Unicorn Academy); producer Stephanie Hodgson (Spidey and His Amazing Friends); and writer Sunita Balsara (Thomas & Friends).

The ACE Program is an immersive animation career excel-erator mentorship program for mid-level animation professionals who identify as women and non-binary, which, through mentoring and workshops, is designed to advance the careers of women in the animation industry by giving them a key credit in the creation of their very own short film. With the support of Netflix through the Fund for Creative Equity, this third iteration of the program has expanded roles and accepted applications from across Canada.

ACE Canada is made possible with the support of sponsors, including Netflix Canada; Canada Media Fund; Creative BC; Telefilm Canada; Toon Boom; Autodesk; Atomic Cartoons; 708 Sound Studio; Canadian Media Producers Association - BC Producer’s Branch; Mainframe Studios; Spark CG Society; Flying Kraken Creative Studios; Urban Safari Entertainment; SyncSketch; Producer Essentials; Pender PR; and the Research House and Statement.
