Photographer and filmmaker Gerco de Ruijter’s residence will take place in July, prior to the festival program, which runs from August 11-14.

20th Countryside Animafest Cyprus - Views of the World, has announced the next artist in residency – visual artist Gerco de Ruijter. The residence will take place in July 2021 in the city of Nicosia and the village of Salamiou, prior to the Animafest program, which runs August 11-14. The artist’s work will be exhibited at the festival in Salamiou in August and in Nicosia in October.

De Ruijter works with photography and film, with a focus on the making of documentary art films. He has had solo and group exhibitions both in the Netherlands and elsewhere. His work is also included in several private and public collections.

In the late 1980s, De Ruijter started using kites and balloons to create images from different perspectives. In 2012 he began using Google Earth to facilitate his work which resulted in two films. Crops (2013) is a production that uses over 1000 circles and centers on pivot irrigation in the USA and Playground (2014) starts with an abstract series of pictures of field lines with identical measurements to look at American football fields. In the installation Dissolve (2017) De Ruijter used a vertical panorama to portray a mountain lake shore, from the early morning darkness to nightfall.

The residency is curated by Yiorgos Tsangaris (artistic director Animafest Cyprus) and Gerben Schermer (curator of animation and contemporary art, Netherlands). The residency is made possible by CBK Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture – Cultural Services.
