Student Academy Awards.
The Student Academy Awards program is a national competition conducted
by the Academy and the Academy Foundation. Each year over 300 college and
university film students from all over the United States compete for awards
and cash grants, with films being judged in four categories: animation,
documentary, dramatic and alternative. This year's ceremony took place
on Sunday, June 14 in Los Angeles. The gold prize ($2,000) in the animation
category was awarded by voice actor June Foray to two students from Florida's
Ringling School of Art & Design, Peter Choe and Neal Nellans, for their
film, Jakata. The silver medal ($1,500) went to Switchback
by Kyle Clark from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles
and the bronze ($1,000) went to Put On A Happy Face by Suzanne Lee
Twining from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. To promote opportunities
to the students beyond the evening, a compilation presentation of the gold
medal award-winning films is circulated each year free of charge to educational
and non-profit organizations nationwide, utilizing a grant from the Eastman
Kodak Co.
