The Canadian Film Centre's Worldwide Short Film Festival

The Toronto Worldwide Short Film Festival has changed its name to the Canadian Film Centre's Worldwide Short Film Festival. Founded by Brenda Sherwood in 1994, the festival was acquired by the Canadian Film Centre in 2000. The Canadian Film Centre is Canada's foremost institution for advanced training and production in film, television and new media. In addition to competition screenings of international and Canadian shorts, the festival will feature panels, symposiums, special presentations, retrospectives and gala screenings.

ASIFA International Open Meeting

The ASIFA International board of directors is inviting all representatives of ASIFA national groups and individual members to attend an open ASIFA meeting, to be held during the upcoming Annecy festival (June 4-9, 2001). The meeting will happen on June 6, 2001 from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm in the Jumel Room, Quai des Clarisses (near the Pierre Lamy theater). SAFO, the Ottawa International Student Animation Festival (October18-21, 2001) has updated their Website with a workshop, seminar andpanel tentative schedule. EM.TV Hires Wall Street Firm To Sell Henson

Embattled German media group EM.TV has hired Wall Street investment firm Allen & Co. to sell the Henson Co. The top candidates to buy the creator of Kermit are Walt Disney and the management of Henson itself. This action comes only a year after EM.TV purchased Henson from heirs of founder Jim Henson for US$680 million. Rumors have surfaced that the Henson heirs haven't nearly earned that amount due to the plummet of EM.TV's stock price.

Eidos Announces Year End Results

Eidos plc, one of the world's leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, announced the results for the fourth quarter and year ended March 31, 2001. Net revenue was 22.6 million pounds (US$32.1 million) for the quarter and 143.5 million pounds ($203.8 million) for the full year, a decrease of 26% on the previous year.

Crouching Tiger TV Toon

Taipei-based SMEC Media & Entertainment has acquired the animated TV rights for Wang Du-Lu's CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON book series on which the hit Sony Classics feature was based. The deal with Vista Publishing Group also gives the Chinese production house the right to produce an animated feature and home video. SMEC is currently pitching the idea around Hollywood. Alexis Wallrich, head of SMEC's U.S. offices in Pasadena, said to Variety, "The source material is a gold mine of fantastic stories and characters.

Nick Announces Summer Schedule

Nickelodeon has announced its new programming schedule for the summer. Beginning Monday, July 2, at 8 pm, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS will join the primetime line-up. SpongeBob will host Nickelodeon's annual "Summer Splash," a daily, three-hour animation marathon beginning Monday, June 18, airing weekday afternoons from 2-5 pm. The "Summer Splash" line-up will include RUGRATS on Mondays; ROCKETPOWER on Tuesdays; THE WILD THORNBERRYS on Wednesdays; HEY ARNOLD! on Thursdays; and CATDOG on Fridays. Renegade Produces Looney Tunes Show Package

Renegade Animation has wrapped on the main title, bumpers and end title package for THE LOONEY TUNES SHOW, a new series featuring classic Warner Bros. cartoons on Cartoon Network. The cel-animated package features the Looney Tunes gang as the members of a Broadway-style show and slips backstage capturing candid glimpses of the characters. "Cartoon Network brought us wonderful scripts and storyboards and our animators had a lot of fun in executing them," said Renegade Animation executive producer Ashley Postlewaite.

Film Roman To Produce Animation For The Man Show

Leading independent animation house Film Roman has signed a deal to provide animation for the upcoming season of THE MAN SHOW on Comedy Central. The North Hollywood-based company will create graphics, title cards and over 30 animated bumpers for the show. The 5-10 second bumpers feature THE MAN SHOW mascot, Uncle Phil in various "manly" situations like barbecuing and sleeping on the couch.

New Line & Burger King Sign Promo For Lord Of The Rings

New Line Cinema has signed an extensive deal with fast-food giant Burger King to promote THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. The agreement represents the single largest promotional arrangement for New Line and one of the largest programs ever launched by Burger King. The program will span more than 10,000 restaurants worldwide and will run longer than the first film runs in theaters.

ASIFA Animation Art Auction

During the Annecy festival (June 4-9, 2001), ASIFA International will hold a silent auction of original animation art at the ASIFA booth. Featured animators include: Bill Plympton (MUTANT ALIENS, in competition this year), Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis (WHEN THE DAY BREAKS, Annecy grand prix 1999), Georges Schwizgebel (past Annecy juror and exhibition artist), Don Hertzfeldt (REJECTED, 2001 Oscar nominee, in panorama this year) and other brilliant animators. All proceeds will go toward the ASIFA production fund to finance new animation collaborations by ASIFA members.

Shrek Stays Hot In #2 Box Office Spot

Buena Vistas PEARL HARBOR held off SHREK to remain box office champ this week, grossing $29.5 million, for a two week cumulative total of $118.8 million. DreamWorks' CG-animated film SHREK stayed hot at the box office, bringing in another $28.1 million in its third week of release, for a cumulative total of $148.4 million. Universal's THE MUMMY RETURNS slipped to #6 for its fifth weekend with $7.7 million, boasting a cumulative total of $181.1 million. Sony's A KNIGHT'S TALE jousted the seventh slot at $3.4 million, with a $49.4 cumulative total.

Western Images Creates "Twist"ed Effects For Nabisco Fun Fruits

Western Images recently created visual effects for "Twist," and "Wacky Faces," two Nabisco spots directed by Mark Dippe, of Pandemonium, for New Yorks FCB agency. Both spots first aired in May 2001. They feature twisted faces in a fun fruit frenzy that filled a cafeterias air with colorful CGI fruit bits.

TOPIX/Mad Dog Creates Asian-Inspired Effects For Our Lady’s Peace Music Vid

TOPIX/Mad Dog completed the Inferno effects and compositing for Life, Canadian rock band Our Ladys Peace first single for their fourth album, Spritual Machines. The video, which made its Canadian debut April 7, 2001, on MUCH MUSIC, has since begun airing in the US on MTV2. TOPIX/Mad Dog created graphics with an Asian flavor, inspired by Kanji characters, a written alphabet common to both China and Japan. They enlisted the assistance of a Chinese calligrapher and created a bed of characters by scanning them into the computer.

ASIFA-Hollywood is presenting another "old and strange" video presentation: sex wars in animation, 1926- 1950, hosted by Milton Knight. Sometimes romantic and sensual,, often violent, the show will present the best and worse of loving couples in cartoons, from America and elsewhere. The event will begin at 7:30 pm. The entry fee will be US$2 for members and $5 for non-members. Seating is limited.
