Corus Entertainment Appoints Peter Moss VP Of Programming

Three months after stepping down as head of Cinar, Peter Moss as been appointed to the newly created position of vice president of programming for Corus Television. Beginning May 1, 2002, Moss will be responsible for enhancing programming across all Corus services by developing strategic approaches to program development, acquisition and partnerships. "Peter has an outstanding track record in both public and private television broadcasting as well as production," said Paul Robertson, president of Corus Television.

B1 Media Leaps To Larger Studio, Expands Talent Base

Design studio B1 Media has moved its headquarters to a new facility in Studio City, California, more than doubling the size of its previous space, and has added several new staffers to its growing talent base. Previously partnered in multimedia company Barbed Wire, Joshua Hatton has moved to B1 as an animator involved in 2D and 3D animation and motion graphics working on DVD, broadcast design and games. Game producer Jason Friedlander joins B1 from MTV's ROAD RULES where he was responsible for developing and writing game competitions.

Barry Koch Promoted To Senior VP For Cartoon Network LA

Barry Koch has been promoted to senior vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network and Boomerang Latin America. Koch began his career at TBS in 1984. He was named vice president of audience research for TNT, Turner Classic Movies, TNT Latin America and Cartoon Network Latin America in 1995. In 1999, Koch moved over to Cartoon Network to oversee programming, creative services and operations for the network.

Condie And Nelvana Build The Ark

The Apocalypse is coming in 30 minutes, but ever-resourceful hero Sam has built an atomic resistant Ark in his backyard. While he and his family watch from the safety of the Ark, war, pestilence and disease rain down without so much as denting the body of the great boat. So goes the plot of THE ARK, a creation of Richard Condie (THE BIG SNIT) in association with Nelvana. This half-hour animated pilot is scheduled to air on Canada's CBC in fall 2002. No word yet on whether or not this Ark will continue to have further adventures as a series.

AMPAS Presents A Visual Effects Seminar

A four-part seminar examining the art of visual effects will be presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences beginning April 30, 2002, at 7:00 pm. The series will continue for three additional Tuesday evenings - May 7, 14 and 21 - and will feature participants who have garnered 25 Academy Award nominations among them. Each session of "The State of the Visual Effects Arts" will focus on a specific area of the visual effects field and will be moderated by Jamie Price, who created the visual effects for THE TIME MACHINE and BICENTENNIAL MAN.

Television Industry Bounces Back At MIPTV 2002

Last October, MIPCOM 2001 Personality of the Year, MTV's Tom Freston, stated in response to the events of September 11th and the diminished attendance of the market, "TV will bounce back." This year's MIPTV, which took place in Cannes from April 15 to 19, 2002, showed strong evidence that the television community is on the way to recovery. Organizer Reed Midem reported over 2,600 buyers from 1,052 companies attended the market and representing an increased number of buyer companies, up 20% from last year.

The Leo Awards Nominees Announced

The regional awards for excellence in film and television in British Columbia, Canada, The Leo Awards, announced their nominees on April 11, 2002. Winners in 74 categories will be announced at two separate ceremonies on May 10 and May 11, 2002. Vancouver-based studios Mainframe and Studio B dominated the animation noms, with Mainframe picking up nominations for series' ACTION MAN and REBOOT as well as four nominations for the direct-to-video BARBIE IN THE NUTCRACKER including Best Animation Program and Best Children or Youth Series.

With 1.3 million pixels and frame rates of up to 1000 frames per second, MCam2 builds on the success of MCam, the motion-capture industry's first million-pixel camera. More than 1500 MCams have been installed by Vicon users such as ILM, Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) and House of Moves.

Infogrames Announces Release Date For Dragon Ball Z Video Game

Interactive entertainment publisher Infogrames, Inc. will ship its first DRAGON BALL Z video game for Game Boy Advance, DRAGON BALL Z: LEGACY OF GOKU on May 14, 2002. The popular DRAGON BALL Z series airs in the U.S. on Cartoon Network, averaging more than 1.5 million viewers per show. The new game encapsulates the show into an interactive experience that puts the DRAGON BALL Z world under control of the player. Developed by Webfoot Technologies, Inc., DRAGON BALL Z: THE LEGACY OF GOKU will be available nationwide on May 15, 2002 for a suggested retail price of $29.99.

The Scorpion King Stings Competition

Topping the box office for the second weekend in a row, THE SCORPION KING, with visual effects by Centropolis FX, took in $17.6M for a two-week total of $60.8M. However, THE SCORPION KING should be on the look out for SPIDER-MAN, who will no doubt dominate the box office next weekend, when it debuts on May 3rd. Psychological drama CHANGING LANES took second place again this weekend, earning $9M with $44.6M to date. Two new releases took third and fourth place with weak debuts.

VanArts Offers New Program In Game Art And Hosts Special Summer Guests

Beginning September 2002, Vancouver Institute of Media Arts (VanArts) will offer a full-time, 48-week diploma program in Game Art Production. Alan Phillips, president of VanArts, explained that the new program was designed to compliment the school's existing CG program, allowing students to concentrate on CG for film and television or games development.

Honest And Mainframe Entertainment Team For New Series

Canadian CGI animation house Mainframe Entertainment and ANGELA ANACONDA creator Honest Entertainment, announced at MIP-TV that they have joined forces to create the new collage animation series FAMILY VALUES. Created and written by Tom Brady (THE SIMPSONS, THE CRITIC) and Joanna Ferrone (co-creator of FIDO DIDO and ANGELA ANACONDA) the series will be produced using collage illustration made from cut paper with photographs used to portray each character's face.

Hershey's World Goes 3D

Santa Monica, California-based Threshold Digital Research Labs (TDRL) has produced and animated "Hershey's Really Big 3D Show," a feature-length original production showcasing 3D animation and presented in wide-screen 3D High Definition format with glasses and digital projection. The 40-minute show runs daily at Hershey's Chocolate World, located in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The show begins with a glimpse into the history of Hershey's chocolate and its advertising, with a lecture on the history of chocolate by the animated D. P. Quigley.

The Capilano College Animation Grad Show is an annual exhibit of student work from the two year, Commercial Animation program (classical)and the eight month, Digital Animation program (3D). Both professional level programs focus on character animation and design. Students and faculty will be in attendance and the winners of Capilano College's four studio-sponsored scholarships (Atomic, Nelvana, Studio B and Bardel) will be announced.

10th Annual Midwest Animators Conference

Sponsored by ASIFA Central, the conference features speakers who focus on various aspects of animation production. The emphasis for many of the presenters is the personal and artistic influences in their work. Another feature of the conference is screenings of various animations as well as open screenings for attendees to show their work. The winning student entry of the HVH World Peace Storyboard and Animation Competition is screened and the new winner is announced.
