VirtueGraphics Create 3D Boat Show

VirtueGraphics has created a 3D demonstration of yacht mechanical equipment for boat shows. The 3 1⁄2 minute animation featured Quantum's "zero speed" stabilizers, which are hydraulic-powered devices located under water in the middle of the yacht. The animation compared the stability of a yacht equipped with the Quantum Controls stabilizer against a yacht without one.

Ascension & Kaydara Debut New Low-Cost Toon Workstation at SIGGRAPH

Ascension and Kaydara have teamed to create a new low-cost animation workstation called Animation Star, which combines the best motion-capture hardware and software. The product will launch at the annual SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Convention in Los Angeles on August 10, 2004. Ascension will demonstrate its new technology in Booth 1918 at the LA Convention Center.

Oregon3D Announces Unreal Technology Seminar at SIGGRAPH 2004

Oregon3D has announced it will offer a series of classes specifically devoted to content creation for the Unreal Engine, the leading 3D technology platform pioneered by Epic Games. Scheduled during the SIGGRAPH 2004 Conference, this one-day session will run on both Aug. 9 and Aug. 10, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm in the Los Angeles Room at The Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

MPC Leads UKTI Trade Mission to SIGGRAPH 2004

MPC (The Moving Picture Co.) will play an instrumental role in U.K. Trade and Investments (UKTI) exploratory trade mission to SIGGRAPH 2004. Partnering with the National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University and UKTI, MPC will form part of the representation from U.K. visual effects companies. Thunderbirds International Rescue Edition Flies onto DVD

Coinciding with the release of the live-action THUNDERBIRDS feature, MGM Home Ent. recently released this slick two-disc box set of THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO and THUNDERBIRD 6 ($29.98). Both of these widescreen features were spawned from the popular U.K. TV series produced by the husband-wife team of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in the 60s. Rich in color, they beautifully transfer the famed Supermarionation to the big screen.

The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) will hold its second annual "Television Producers' Boot Camp -- Workshops & Pitch Pit." The "Boot Camp" will serve as a full run-through of the television development and production process, providing attendees with a unique view into industry trends through a series of workshops, demonstrations and networking events. The event also will allow attendees to formally pitch their program ideas to development executives from major talent agencies, networks, as well as production and distribution companies.

DC Rules at the Eisner Awards

DC Comics ruled the 16th annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, with projects and creators from DC titles involved in half of the award winners. The gala ceremony was held on July 23, 2004, in the Ballroom at the San Diego Convention Center. Dark Horse took home four Eisners. The only other publisher with multiple Eisners was Top Shelf.

Ghost in the Shell 2 Clips To Screen at Otakon 2004

DreamWorks will be screening new clips from Mamoru Oshii's anime film, INNOCENCE: GHOST IN THE SHELL 2, at Otakon 2004, being held from July 30 to Aug. 1, 2004 in Baltimore, Maryland. The screening will be July 30, between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Representatives from DreamWorks and Production I.G. will be hosting this special preview in Panel 1. Footage of the sequel will also be shown throughout the three-day convention at the DreamWorks booth (#1223), where free postcards and posters will be available.

Superman Radio Announcer & Bluto Voice Beck Dies

Jackson Beck, the voice-over master of the SUPERMAN radio show, has died, reports NEWSDAY. He was 92. Beck died at about 6:00 am July 28, 2004 of complications of old age, according to Jeff David, a friend. He had been ill after suffering a series of small strokes four or five years ago, David said.

Boondocks Heads for Cartoon Network

Aaron McGruder's THE BOONDOCKS comicstrip will be heading to Cartoon Network in animated form, reports THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Cartoon Network is in final negotiations with Sony Pictures Television to air a half-hour series. Originally the strip was greenlit as a pilot by FOX, which passed on the series after seeing a six-minute reel earlier in the year. Cartoon Network would air the new series during it popular Adult Swim block. McGruder and Reggie Hudlin are exec producers on the show.

Miyazaki's Castle In Competition at Venice

2nd Annual Hypefest Doubles Attendance

HypeFest, the 2nd annual unique festival that links independent ideas with commercial creativity, concluded its weekend-long screenings and festivities with an awards show and partying to the sounds of DJ Starskee Suavé. The festival took place July 24-25, 2004 at the CineSpace in Hollywood and showcased approximately 75 original short-subject works from filmmakers around the world, with attendance double that of the inaugural festival organizers said.
