Home on the Range: a Patch of DVD Heaven

Disneys last mostly 2D feature, HOME ON THE RANGE makes its way onto DVD Sept. 14 (Walt Disney Home Ent., $29.99). Written and directed by Will Finn and John Stanford and featuring all-new songs from Academy Award-winner Alan Menken, HOME ON THE RANGE is a wild west, save the farm comedy centering on three lovable cows (voiced by Jennifer Tilly, Judi Dench and Rosanne Barr).

THX 1138 Director’s Cut on DVD

While George Lucas blockbuster STAR WARS trilogy DVD set, which streets Sept. 21, 2004, is getting all the buzz both positive and negative Lucas debut from 1971, THX 1138, makes its welcome DVD bow on Sept. 14 (Warner Home Video, $26.99). This DIRECTORS CUT, like the STAR WARS films, contains extended footage with ILM-produced CGI; however, it merely adds greater scope and detail to the underground factory, where Robert Duvall and company work in a dull, depressing and dehumanized futuristic society.

Clifford’s Really Big Movie on DVD

After a brief theatrical run, CLIFFORDS REALLY BIG MOVIE from Scholastic Ent. has arrived on DVD (Warner Home Video, $26.98). The traditionally-animated movie based on the lovable CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG childrens book and TV series contains more elaborate backgrounds and CG effects. Robert Ramirez directs.

Kangaroo Jack Gets Animated Direct-to-Video

Warner Home Video (WHV) has announced the release of the new animated feature KANGAROO JACK G'DAY U.S.A.!, based on the surprise 2003 box office live-action hit. Price at $24.98 on DVD and $14.94 on VHS, the movie will arrive in stores Nov. 16, 2004.

Kaena: The Prophecy on DVD

KAENA: THE PROPHECY, Frances answer to the 3D animation of Pixar, DreamWorks and Blue Sky, was released Sept. 7 on DVD (Columbia TriStar Home Ent., $24.96). The sci-fi/fantasy, directed by Chris Delaporte, which started out as a short to promote a videogame, melds anime and European influences. Its about a mysterious alien planet whose evolution is tied to an immense tree and the fight for freedom led by a teenager. English-language voice over work is provided by Kirsten Dunst, the late Richard Harris and Anjelica Huston.

Looney Tunes DVD Strikes Gold Again on Nov. 2

Warner Home Video has just announced Nov. 2, 2004, for the release of the highly anticipated four-disc set, THE LOONEY TUNES GOLDEN COLLECTION VOLUME TWO ($64.92), with more than 60 digitally remastered and uncut animated shorts, along with the two-disc set, THE LOONEY TUNES SPOTLIGHT COLLECTION VOLUME TWO ($26.99).

Garfield and Friends on DVD

GARFIELD AND FRIENDS, VOLUME ONE (Fox Home Ent. $39.98), was recently released in a three-disc DVD set to tout the Saturday morning series that lasted from 88-94. There are 24 episodes in all shown in the original broadcast format, not the shorter syndicated format. The U.S. ACRES segments are titled Orsons Farm in keeping with the overseas release.

Passion Performs Powerfully on DVD

Released to retail stores on August 31, 2004, Mel Gibsons controversial film THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST has sold 2.5 million DVD and VHS units within its first 12 hours of release. 20th Century Fox Home Ent. exec said that surprisingly customers were buying more than one copy, averaging 1.8 per person. On its current pace, the film is set to rank up with home entertainment powerhouses SHREK and FINDING NEMO, which sold 6 million units within the first three days of release.

Original Star Trek Series Returns to DVD

Sporting a custom plastic shell and condensed to eight discs with bonus features, STAR TREK THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (1966), comes repackaged to DVD on Aug. 31, 2004 (Paramount Home Ent. $129.99). All 29 episodes following the adventures of Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew contain remastered picture and sound (Dolby Digital 5.1) and are presented in original broadcast order rather than the production order of the previous DVDs.

Passion Sports No Extras on DVD

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST comes to DVD on Aug. 31, 2004 (Fox Home Ent., $29.98) with no bonus features but mastered at the maximum bit rate for optimal picture and audio quality. It is anticipated that a special edition will be release next spring (Easter?) containing a slew of bonus features, including the stellar vfx work done by Keith Vanderlaans Captive Audience Prods. under the supervision of Ted Rae (who also served as 2nd unit director).

Iron Giant Special Edition DVD Pushed a Month

Warner Home Video (WHV) has pushed the release of the IRON GIANT special edition DVD ($19.97) one month. Originally set to hit stores on Sept. 7, 2004, the DVD will be released on Nov. 16, 2004, following the theatrical release of Brad Birds next film, THE INCREDIBLES. The special features include eight "never-before-seen" scenes including an alternate opening, all with director commentary, 13 mini-documentaries highlighting key sequences and a featurette, "The Voice Of The Giant," hosted Vin Diesel.

Bambi DVD Comes Out of the Forest on March 1

The long-awaited DVD release of Disney's BAMBI (1942) will arrive on March 1, 2005, according to Buena Vista Home Ent. in a two-disc set priced at $30. It has been eight years since the sublime masterpiece has been available for the home entertainment system. And while the studio is touting digitally restored picture for greater color and clarity, we will have to wait and see how well the DVD captures the natural effect of the original film.

Warner Announces Release Date for Matrix DVD Set

As previously reported, Warner Home Video has announced that it will release a 10-disk MATRIX collection. The studio has now confirmed that the set will hit stores Dec. 7, 2004 and will be priced at $79.92. THE ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION will include the trilogy, THE ANIMATRIX and 35 hours of bonus material as well as a Neo bust and 80-page book.

ADV Films Announces Lady Death DVD

ADV Films has announced a street date of Oct. 5, 2004 for the DVD of LADY DEATH: THE MOTION PICTURE ($29.98), the first animated feature produced by the companys original content division. Working closely with LADY DEATH creator Brian Pulido, first time director and conceptual designer Andrew Orjuela teamed with writer Carl Macek,(developer and story editor of the ROBOTECH series, and producer/director of the English language version of VAMPIRE HUNTER D) to bring the Chaos! Comics character to the screen. ALI composer Bill Brown provided the score.
