DVD Spotlight on Tom and Jerry

TOM AND JERRY SPOTLIGHT COLLECTION THE PREMIERE VOLUME (Warner Home Video, $26.99) streets Oct. 26, 2004, with 40 of their very best cartoons from 43-56 in the two-disc set, including all of their Oscar winners and three CinemaScope entries. However, be forewarned: three of the shorts on disc one are edited: THE MILKY WAIF, THE TRUCE HURTS and THE LITTLE ORPHAN. WHV said the snafu was unintentional and will be putting out replacement discs very soon at no extra cost. Details to come.

It’s Off to the Wacky Races on DVD

Hanna-Barberas WACKY RACES may have been short-lived from 68-69 cancelled due to protests about excessive violence in childrens programming, of all things yet it still managed to capture the imagination of Saturday morning viewers with its humorous satire of THE GREAT RACE and THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES. Now all 34 episodes can be found on the three-disc DVD set (Warner Home Video, $34.98), which streets Oct. 26, 2004.

New Family Guy DVD Features Peek at American Dad

Fox Home Entertainment is set to release FAMILY GUY: THE FREAKIN' SWEET COLLECTION ($19.99) on Dec. 14, 2004, which will feature a sneak peek of Seth MacFarlanes newest toon AMERICAN DAD.

The new series follows an overzealous CIA worker who household contains a space alien and a German-speaking goldfish. The FAMILY GUY disk will feature a preview of AMERICAN DAD as well as an interview with MacFarlane about the series.

Ghost in the Shell 2 Appears on DVD in December

DreamWorks has announced that it will release Mamoru Oshii's GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE on DVD on Dec. 28, 2004. The film will be presented in 1.85:1 widescreen with a Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack with English subtitles. Extras will include an audio commentary from Oshii, a MAKING OF GHOST IN THE SHELL two featurette and trailers. The title will sell for $29.99. The film was released in theaters by DreamWorks specialty arm Go Fish Pictures and has grossed nearly $900,00 to date.

BIONCLE 2 DVD Opens Up Characters and Environments

Terry Shakespeare and David Molina, co-directors of the BIONICLE 2: LEGENDS OF METRU NUI DVD (Buena Vista Home Ent, $29.99), released Oct. 19, 2004, told AWN about the challenges of the CGI prequel made by Creative Capers in Glendale, California, in association with LEGO, Miramax Films and Create TV & Film Ltd.

Manga Releases Guyver Series on DVD

On Nov. 23, 2004, Manga Ent. will release the 12-part series THE GUYVER in a two-DVD box set featuring six 30-minute episodes on each disc. When high-school student, Sho, unwittingly activates a mysterious alien weapon, he is transformed into The Guyver, a powerful mechanized warrior possessing an incredible alien arsenal. Ren & Stimpy Uncut on DVD

For fans of irreverent humor of John Ks REN & STIMPY will be glad to know that the first two seasons of REN & STIMPY have arrived on DVD. From Paramount Home Video, THE COMPLETE FIRST AND SECOND SEASONS features more than 30 episodes on three disks from the 1991-93 seasons including the banned episode "Man's Best Friend." Spidey 2.5 DVD Bound for 2005

Taking a page out of THE MATRIX and THE LORD OF THE RINGS, Columbia TriStar Home Ent. intends to release a SPIDER-MAN 2.5 DVD in 2005 with additional vfx and action scenes, director Sam Raimi told Website IGN.com. He indicated that it was a financial decision and not an artistic one on his part.

Simpsons Search for More D’Oh on DVD

Fox Home Entertainment is hoping to cash in on the popularity of THE SIMPSONS on DVD with the release of SIMPSONS CHRISTMAS 2 and THE SIMPSON FIFTH SEASON in time for the holiday buying rush. The second Christmas-themed collection will arrive in stores on Nov. 2 for $14.98 followed by the complete fifth season on Dec. 21 for $49.98. SIMPSONS episodes on DVD have sold more than 6 million units.

IDT's DPS Film Roman and Harry Connick Jr. Team For 3D Christmas Special

DPS Film Roman, an IDT Ent. company, and recent Emmy award winner, Harry Connick Jr., will join forces to co-produce THE HAPPY ELF, a one-hour 3D animated holiday special based on Connick's original children's song from his 2003 release, HARRY FOR THE HOLIDAYS. HC Prods., whose partners include Connick, Scott Landis and Ann Marie Wilkins, will co-produce.

IDT’s Mainframe and Tony Hawk to Produce 3D-Animated Feature

IDT Ent. and its animation subsidiary, Mainframe Ent., have entered into an agreement with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk to produce a computer-generated animated feature for direct-to-DVD/video release. IDT Ent. Sales will handle worldwide television and DVD/video distribution of the Mainframe production, tentatively titled TONY HAWK IN BOOM BOOM GOES THE CIRCUS.

Special Extended Return of the King DVD to Street Dec. 14

Its official: The four-disc THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING SPECIAL EXTENDED DVD EDITION (New Line Home Ent., $39.99) will hit stores on Dec. 14. As expected, it will contain more than 50 minutes of new footage, including a cameo by director Peter Jackson being quelled by an arrant arrow, and 300 new vfx shots (for a 250-minute running time). A five-disc collectors gift set, featuring a 52-minute film composing doc, will sell for $79.99.

Star Wars DVD & Game Net $115M

On their initial release date Sept. 21, the STAR WARS Trilogy DVD set and LucasArts STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT videogame netted $115 million worldwide, reports VARIETY. 20th Century Fox Home Ent. did not break out the two releases, but said that 90% of the revenues came from the DVDs and a good percentage of that came from the U.S. alone. Fox and LucasFilms split home entertainment money on the original STAR WARS, but the studio only gets a distribution fee for EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI.

Kim Possible Director Bailey To Release Major Damage Graphic Novel, DVD

KIM POSSIBLE director Chris Bailey will be releasing both the MAJOR DAMAGE graphic novel and 3D short film in December 2004. The book is available solo, or with the optional DVD, which features storyboards/movie comparisons and preliminary paintings. The full-color 96-page, digest features comics, sketches and a behind-the-scenes look as little Melvin turns into Major Damage. MAJOR DAMAGE is the tale of a little boy who is transformed into his favorite superhero, protecting the world from mutants, monsters and alien scum. The comic and DVD are being released by Sky Dog Press.

The Force of the Star Wars Trilogy Now on DVD

Finally, the wait is over for the original STAR WARS trilogy on DVD, as the impressive four-disc set arrives in stores Sept. 21 (Fox Home Ent., $69.98). Purists, of course, have been up in arms for two years after George Lucas revealed that he had no intention of making the theatrical versions of A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI available on DVD.

While George Lucas blockbuster STAR WARS trilogy DVD set, which streets Sept. 21, 2004, is getting all the buzz both positive and negative Lucas debut from 1971, THX 1138, makes its welcome DVD bow on Sept. 14 (Warner Home Video, $26.99). This DIRECTORS CUT, like the STAR WARS films, contains extended footage with ILM-produced CGI; however, it merely adds greater scope and detail to the underground factory, where Robert Duvall and company work in a dull, depressing and dehumanized futuristic society.
