3D Animation MFA Student - Industry change advice

Hi friends!

My name is Marcella Uva. I just started my first semester at Academy of Art University in the 3D Animation and Visual Effects MFA program with a focus on 3D animation. I'm a self-taught 2D artist (http://marcellauva.portfoliobox.net/marcellauvaartportfolio), currently working in the tech industry in product development. I've always wanted to work as an animator in the Film & TV industry, but didn't have the means to do so until recently. So I'm shifting gears and I know that going back to school will get me to where I need to be.

While I continue to work on drawing skills applicable to animation, I was wondering if I could get some advice from seasoned animator about the inevitable change in industry I face.

  • As someone who is endeavoring to move in this direction, how does one find guidance here? I'd love to hear any advice you might have about starting out in the industry and getting your foot in the door.
  • Is obtaining a mentorship from a working animator realistic or beneficial?

Thank you for all of your wise words in advance!

Marcella
