Tips for self education

I want to animate professionally (2d) without having to go to a university because it's just too expensive. I wanted to know what books do I need to get an understanding of how to produce an animated film from scratch. As of now I'm studying anatomy and life drawing and the only book on animation I'm reading is the animator's survival kit. I'm trying to get the best education I can get from books or any other affordable resources. Thanks for any information you can give me.

hello Afro Cat,

i like your logic. We're producers in the corporate field, and i have to say that unless its a very top university, no one really cares in the profesisonal world. In the world of work, what matters msot is you portfolio and reel. Many of the best animators we work with didnt go to animation School. instead, they learnt from scratch themselves. The best advice i can give for you starting out, is to go to and watch many of their tutorials in after effects there. Adobe is the main software used in this field. Then i'd suggest, once you are confident, to put up small gifs and clips on dribble, this is a great place for inspiration and showcasing.

Hope this helps,

On our site, we cover some inspration and production in this area. So maybe some of our articles can help too

2D these days is kinda hard.

2D these days is kinda hard. I find 3D material a lot easier. I am currently self teaching myself 2D as well. I recommend AnimationMentor Workshop. There's a Cartoony course that's fairly cheap. It can teach 2D and its helpful. I extremely recommend YouTube for 2D like me. Or do you mean 2D paper animation? That's really old school but check out Japan videos! They still do that! And you get behind the scenes at those 2D studios

Some time ago when I became

Some time ago when I became interested in animation, I also wanted to study it myself, and it was harder than I expected. I had books, watched videos, and so on, but I needed more. So I decided to go to the university after all because there I can learn everything more deeply, and also gain more experience, meet people, and so on. And now I'm a third-year student and can say that it was the right decision. Studying is indeed expensive, but I did my best to get a scholarship. And now I do my best to prove I deserve it. Sometimes I use the help of because I need to write a lot of papers, and it's hard, so the help of online writers is very beneficial to me. And it also saves me time, so I can have more time to practice animation and improve my practical skills.
