Hi everyone,
I was inspired to share some of my daily gesture drawings. This used to be one of the aspects of figure drawing and character design I struggled with the most, so I went on a journey to master it. During that journey I quickly fell in love with act of capturing the life of the human figure on paper and nowadays gesture drawing is one of my favorite activities.

Enjoy and any questions or comments are welcome.
You're gesture drawing are fantastic, well done
Thanks a lot Calybar! Here are some more.
Some drawings from today's session. Questions or comments are always welcome :).
This was quite a work out, but it was fun!
What kind of reference source are you using?
Hi wontobe,
I collect most of my references on pinterest. You should also check out https://www.bodiesinmotion.photo
Some exercises from today.
Here's the complete motion for this one.
Here are the last frames for this one.
Some drawings from today's session. I find this such a relaxing activity. Somedays I can go on for hours without getting tired.
Some gesture drawings from today. When drawing two (or more) figures you look for exactly the same things as when drawing one. The interaction of the two figures becomes the big picture that you should capture.
Some drawings from today. When it comes to gesture drawing, athletes are at the top of my list of favorite subjects. There's a lot of energy in their movements, and I like the challenge of matching it.
You are drawing pretty well! Congratulations!
Thank you brugluiz :).
The most common thing I see missing in the work of aspiring artists is a lack of understanding of fundamentals. Especially how to draw form in perspective. A lack of this foundational skill is what is keeping a lot of artists from producing good figure drawings. One of the key differences between a beginner and a professional artist is the amount of knowledge that they are able to apply to their work. There is no mystery or magic. Learn the fundamentals! Since line is what you will use to create everything else in drawing, start with line control. Then learn the basics of perspective and how to draw simple geometric forms. And then how to properly light them. If you want to get into figure drawing and character design, learn anatomy and proportions. There is an order to things. Disorder creates confusion. You shouldn’t attempt to run before you learn how to walk.
Great comment, wish there was a way to post it at the top of this thread.
Thank you wontobe! As people read through the thread I think it'll be easy to find.
There are many things to master in order to become a good artist, and figuring out what to practice can become frustrating. You shouldn’t attempt to learn too many things at once. Plan for the long term. Just like when making a drawing, work from the big picture to the details. Set goals you want to achieve at the end of the year and then break it down into monthly and then weekly goals. Developing your artistic skills take time, and trying to rush through the process will only slow down your development. Patience to go through the process is one of the keys for success in any endeavor!
Wow. These are really awesome ^_^
Thank you Incredibly Lame :)!
I had a lot of fun doing these drawings. As you probably can tell I'm back at playing with shape design and proportions inspired by the references I'm using. The challenge I find in these is to not lose the vitality of the pose while playing with design. I still attempt to keep the action as intact as possible. I especially like how the girl with the sword at the bottom left came out, both the pose and the shapes. Let's see what subject I'll be in the mood of drawing tomorrow :).
I just realised that I have written this article since last week but didn't post it anywhere. And it's not going to help anybody sitting on my harddrive so here it is. If there are any aspects of gesture drawing you guys are struggling with or would like me to explain my way of tackling it feel free to write that in this thread. Let's keep on practicing :).

More fun stuff! I'm still learning more about the design of the human body everyday I study it.
Last year I decided to start doing my gesture drawings sessions digitally and collect them in a manual. Actually that was not my intention at the start. I just wanted some digital gesture drawings to use for my tutorials among other things. It took some getting used to in the beginning since I was accustomed to do them on paper. As I started to produce more pages and other artists seemed to like it I thought: “Hey, why not make a PDF file out of these so other artists can download them and keep them around as inspiration?” And so the Gesture Drawing Demonstrations manual was born. And today I drew page 181.
Even in this large collection of drawings, there are a select few that stand out as my favorites. I challenged myself to pick out my top five and explain why they stand out for me. For more, you can visit: http://www.swendly.com/tutorials.html
