WHILE THEY SLEPT

CLIP AND MAKING OF: http://www.studiotacitus.co.uk/clip4.html

I’ve really been slipping on the whole publicity thing for my new / current film While They Slept...but, the thing is that it’s a full time job in it's own right. But, I want to attempt to bring a thread here to CGTalk again for this.

While They Slept is a animation that was born inside another animation of mine / is running parallel to another animation of mine The Pilot. The way in which I make these animations means that this happens quite a bit.

Have you not tried to make money off your work?

Have you not tried to make money off your work?

Money?...no, not yet. I did nearly enter a competition once, to try and win some money...but I had to bail out because it was going to cost over three thousand pounds to use the music.

getting music

You can probably get someone to do you a score if you go to the right forum.
Think about it if your film gets enough viewers thats a whole lot of audience for someone trying to publicise their music.

I'm doing a short film at the moment, once its done I will wave it about in front of my musical friends and hopefully one of them will want a credit other wise I will be digging through forums.

LOL @ wave it front of musical friend!

Yes I did a film once where my dad wrote an entire original score. It’s a very stressful thing as I am so hard to please about everything...but there was a lot more to it than that, again its money problems with hiring a orchestra (something we didn’t do, but that I really wanted to do)

So I read your blog and it gave answers to some of my questions. The blog color should be changed, I was having a really hard time reading it. I will keep an eye on your progress.

The use of lighting and shadow is excellent! There are jobs out there that focus just on that.

Yeah, I somtimes wonder if the blog is a little bit too open, honest and complaining...but, it seems that it's some sort of cathartic thing.

Thanks!

Yeah, the main problem really is that you have to move many miles to the city...thats the big part I'm struggling with...I'm very much use to low populations and clean air...but, i really want to be a working director...so i'm probably in the end going to have to say goodbye to it...really very conflicted about exactly where i want to go to though.

Hi

Just wanted to say that normally I'm not a big fan of 3D, I find it a bit cold. However, your clip was a revelation, so beautiful and the pacing was so subtle and elegant, not an easy thing to acheive. Having been to many festivals I am sure this would do well, espeacially if you have a strong story. Saying that even if it is an experimental piece I think it works purely on a visual level.

Many congratulations

Thank you Greg.

Greg has been quite incredible with the support and encouragement on this film and has had to put up with a lot of my complaining...there’s a lot of conflict going on in my head about it all. They say your meant to have breaks at the weekend and stop working at 5pm each day...that could be part of the problem as I tend to not do that.

Here we go. It’s now completed-ish. I thought I could contain an entire story in the space of the chosen piece of music “Pie Jesu” from Faure...but I just couldn’t quite manage it...I’ve always found it hard to do that…I think every story teller is different and for me there is a ongoing fight against it...it’s a internal battle in my mind...the hovering man dressed in red above my left shoulder is telling me to do the speeded up story approach...and on the right dressed in white is another hovering man...he’s saying...no, that’s not you.

I believe anyway that there is no particualr plan on these things...and you just uncannily weave the shots together...when it comes to the edit you just have to fit the shots round the music...and if the music runs out at four minutes...then well, the music runs out at four minutes.

Hey there

this may be old news to you but here is a library of public domain classical music:

http://www.musopen.com/about.php

Here's the bit of the faq where it tells you about making profit from public domain music (basically yes you can)

http://www.musopen.com/faq.php#6

Hope that helps. I have been trying the wave film in front of musical friends route and so far.....lots of enthusiasm.......no music.

Good luck with it.
