35mm projector flickering.

We're doing a black and white animation, very high contrast, black on white with almost no greys inbetween.
Problem is when transfering to 35mm the projection flickers.
There are a few workarounds for this, adding more background elements to reduce white areas, adding a slight coloured tint to scenes to reduce contrast.
Does anyone else have experience with this and can suggest some other solutions?
