Okay...decided to get motivated on the digital painting and have been outlining a scene to work on. It isn't in particular anything spectacular at this point - just very rough outlining/guidelines.
The tree isn't supposed to be dead, it'll have a heck of a lot of greenery on it in the end...and as for depth, there will be pine forests in the distance, in front of the mountains, so when I actually paint those pine forests in, it will be easier to gauge the distances. Yeah...looks flat at the moment because it's a very rough outline only.
Most of the outline will be repainted during the actual painting, also. I don't want to go for sketchy black outlines in this piece...

Decided to dive in to doing an initial value study...not sure if I'm doing it right. It isn't complete yet as far as this part is concerned, but it seems to be coming along.
