Off the beaten path - internships in socal?

I've posted my info on AWN and a few other places but figured I'd ask. I am a current animation student at Brooks College in California. I'm looking for an internship that I can start next semester sometime (begins January 2007). I'm hitting the places we have listed but figured I'd ask to see if there are any cool small studios around my area (anywhere within Cypress/Long Beach or close to these areas) that may not be as well known.

I've checked out some places in Burbank but 60-90 minutes each way during peak hours will be tough to juggle with full time work, full time school, homework and the rest added on top of that. I still have another semester to go and am working on a portfolio and animations for a demo reel (we will have an industry mixer Dec 15 so needs to be ready). Until then I just put a resume and a few samples here;

If anyone knows of any cool studios aside from the big names (which I have already contacted) that do traditional or Flash animation -with no baby in a blender style productions- or possibly texture designs or storyboarding I'd be interested in hearing about them. My skills are still in flux as we cover more 3D, some editing programs and other things during the remaining 5 months of my education. I also began life drawing again last week. I've focused mainly on toony animals and so have to correct my lesser experience drawing human characters.

Oh, I had some computer programming background a few years back, nothing deep but I am interested in doing art -few places I went wanted to put me into those more administrative and technical areas which I am trying to run away from. ;)

Hopefully some place that doesn't mind students and is doing some fun work.

Thanks for any help or advice.
