You should get whichever type your DVD burner uses (the one in my Powerbook G4 uses -R, for example). Either one will play in a standard player.
I have the same question as you but I went to this web site.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-R
I have a little better understand of the different disks. From what I read, it does not matter if it is -R or +R, because they are both supported. One DVD company came out with -R and a different company came out with +R but the standers conference approved of both of them. There are six differnet DVD formats, four different high definition formats, three CD formats, one laser format and a partridge in a pear tree...
What I would like to know is what format is used on the DVD movies I buy?
back in school, i had a teacher that told us to only use -R's (on G5's), but i don't think he ever told us why. maybe some kind of mac/pc cross platform thing.
but it sounds like it really doesn't make a difference.

Maybe Macs only use -R's. Like I said before, those are the ones that work in my Powerbook G4. +R's don't. I know for sure that the -R's that I burn work in standard DVD players.
I agree with DSB. I have a PC, and I remember one incident in particular where I used a +R disc to burn an animation for a panel presentation. It worked fine on my PC and in a standard DVD player, but it wouldn't play on the Mac that was set-up for the presentation. I now use -R's to burn all my DVD's so they will play on both Macs and PC's.
Did you attend AiW? I went to your website, and you seem to know some people that I knew in school.

I remember! That was a good animation. Are you still animating or only focusing on comics? By the way, I was also at Otakon.

Yes, I was in the Alley. I also hosted a Flash coloring panel, and if you still have the program book, I have an ad in it. I'm also going to be at Anime USA, and I'm thinking about attending Katsucon.

I had a prof tell me the same thing. We were also using macs (g5). My pc has a +R and I bought a huge pack of +R DVDs..... so are you guys saying I should not burn my portfolio/ reel for grad school applications onto my +Rs?
Nope - not saying that at all:
...which is probably what they'll use to look at your reel.
-R work in about 70% of DVD players. Ive used both, just use -R if your going to give them to people.
I'm making a DVD-ROM not a DVD for use in a standard player.... maybe I didn't specify. I'm just going to be burning image files and quicktime movies onto the DVD. I expect they'll view it from a Mac... but not sure. I just had a prof tell me it doesn't matter which I use unless I'm using old software, which I'm not. Maybe I should just put them on CD's to avoid all this hassle... I'll just have to make more of them.
all i know is its best to use R+...they work for computers that take both R+ and R- DVDs, whereas an R- DVD will only work on R- computers.
im not sure if that makes a whole lot os sense but thats how we work it in college
Acually -R is better, They work on more DVD players than +Rs, -R work fine on computers too. I burn tons of movies for friends and +R only worked for like 3 people, but when I started using -R nobody had a problem.
BUT! -Rs will not work on 100% of the DVD players out there, thats because professional DVDs are machine pressed.
BTW - I burn ISO im not sure what everyone else burns.
wotta co-inky-dink!
Just got a new computer with my first burner and bought blank Dvds today and asked the guy what's the diff.
DVD+ R you can burn additional stuff later incrementally. You can't re-write, just burn additional stuff later.
DVD + R does not work in Macs apparently.

Hi acetate assassin! I have a question to you. How do you see flash animation on DVD. As far as I can understand you want see your flash works on TV, right? Is it possible?
I burned my flash recently to DVD to. But it doesn't show on TV :( So thats why I convert it to video with this tool. I also add logo in my video. I like it. :)
Keep clear!
hmm, do you use the free version?
my old method was doing my animation by hand on paper, capturing it with premiere and exporting it to a image sequence. then i would upload my frames into flash and do ink and paint, and lip sync, and then finally, i would export my finished scene as an illustrator image sequence and upload it into after effects for editing and sound. since i'd do all the audio syncing in flash first, all that would be left is to add sound and minor effects and export as a quicktime file.
the cool thing about this method is that it gave my work a pretty professional look, but it was really time consuming.
now i'm trying to get into the whole "paperless animation" thing, and trying to just do everything directly in flash with my wacom just because i don't have the time for my old method.
but as far as i know, your flash has to be converted to either an avi or quicktime file in order to burn it to dvd
