IFS Short Film : Icarus

"Icarus" is a short film two co-students and I created back in 2002 while attending the animation course of the Internationale Filmschule Köln. Its production was riddled with the many problems every filmmaker has to face, and which invariably drive newbies up the walls. Finishing this thing was a Herculian effort, especially compositing, and it wouldn't have happened without the night shifts co-creator Corinna Kochendörfer threw in. (Still haven't figured out how our colleague Jan Locher managed to paint and match all the backgrounds within a single night.)
As for myself, I animated and cleaned all of the villain team (three characters, one model) and did animation and especially clean-up on the other characters.
There are still a few "mistakes" in it, some obvious, some less obvious if you don't know the production process, and we had to make a LOT of compromises and cut many corners - but all in all the result is something we were pleased with. ("Hey, it's, like, done!")
So let's hear it for this first!

looks great for a student effort!! I especially like when the baddies are growling at their little brother

Thanks! I had to deal with three characters, meaning the animation approach is a bit on the simplistic side. The characters don't move at all in some scenes where I'd have liked at least a little movement, all for schedule reasons, and I animated a single character who was then multiplied in others. Doesn't alway work visually, but that one, yes, I'd say it looks OK in that scene.

hey, you don't need to justify yourself to me. I filmed my final student short in 2 weeks and a half by myself, all of its original 9 minutes without even an animatic to guide me ( I later decided to cut it down to 4).
Sure, it wasn't in drawn animation, but, I did animate my cut-outs in ones and had scenes with up to 4 character in them. It was manic, but I still look back at that film with fondness.

Oh, so do I, it was quite a ride! I tend to be very critical of myself, though. If I could talk the other two into doing a remake of sorts, well, it would be interesting to see the difference.

I know exactly what you mean, although I really enjoyed making my short but, I just can't look at it and I only show it when people beg me :D
It really makes me cringe! I would definately like to do a remake especially because I really love the story, voice over and music, but the people that did that lovely "jasper morello" film beat me to it, as they used a very similar technic to the one that I was things of using.
