DC just tried to launch a collaborative effort with the French company Humanoids a couple of years ago, so a lot of that stuff's still floating around in english. I'd recomend The Nikopol Trilogy by Enki Bilal. This actually had a hardback edition which is the only really good binding any of the US editions got. I also like the first two Incal books by Jodorowski and Moebius, which came out in cheap paperbacks. There was also a recent run of Metal Hurlant that was generally pretty good-- all anthology stuff in a sci-fi vein. Outside of the Humanoids stuff, I'm not too familiar with any of it.
I'm actually in contact with a French company which holds the copyrights to one of those characters in this website, to try and introduce it to the US. I'm also trying to establish contacts here in the US.
I like European comics, especially the ones that feature realistic comics, rather than super heroes
there's a vast world of great European comics that's virtually unknown in the US and I find that to be shocking! a world away from Superman, Batman and Spiderman, a world of realistic comics, day to day people that we can actually relate to....I guess you guys can tell that I'm sick and tired of super heroes!
I grew up with Astérix and various other French and Belgian comic books, as well as the odd German series. I think it's very healthy to have international influences as the American comic book and animation market, for all its grandeur and immortal classics, can be a little too self-sufficient for my taste.
I faintly remember a German funny about a goucho and his rubber horse which I used to like as a kid. Think it was called "Jimmy & Julio" ...
