Erotic animations

Im just wondering what people think about all kinda erotic or sexy cartoons. Like for instance all those Mangas and Hentai stuff and what ever is on the market to buy. Is it good or is all that stuff just crap???

Animated characters having sex? Suddenly a principle of animation like Slow In and Slow Out sounds dirty.

That's just a start.

Appeal (And so it begins...)

Anticipation (Foreplay?)

Timing

Arcs

Exaggeration (So I've heard)

Follow Through and Overlapping Action *goes more or less blind*

You forgot "post-production".

I dunno, but somehow my brain spun that one into a innuendo.

I think sex in cartoons works best when it's done with a pinch of humour and to draw caricatures of human sexual behaviour. Naturally, characters like Betty Boop and Jessica Rabbit would fall under that category. I think Jessica in particular makes for a very nice connection between the cartoony elements in the real world and the real elements in cartoon world. Then there's the strongly satirical approach like in Fritz the Cat.

As for hentai - may work, but doesn't for me. Never liked anime-style to begin with and using the style to satisfy some out-of-touch-with-reality-desire for spicy scenes isn't something I'd pay big bucks for. Cartoon sex shouldn't be about sex as such. (See above.) Real porn is cheaper to produce and easier to obtain. ;)

Oooh Baby!

Erotic Animation, I feel, has a place as an artistic form of animation. Even stuff that would be rather explicit, if it pushed the boundaries of animation as an art form, it would be quite acceptable. Hentai is interesting because it often has a very low prodution value. Also it is by far more culturally acceptable in Japan, being a "legitimate" form of pornography. Bill Plymton has some interesting peices I would put in the art category. Exploring the darker or comedic aspects of sexuality are mainstays in literature.

Why not in animation?

Enough of my rambl'n

To answer the original question: There is a lot of erotic animation ("hentai") in Japan. Many titles are released every year. It's not nearly as prolific as, say, the American porn industry, but it's still a big money maker.

Obviously, this is due in no small part to Japanese culture; animation is seen differently there than it is in, say, America.

I don't know if or how much American attitudes towards animation have changed in recent years, but I judge that there's still a prevailing opinion that animation is generally "kid's stuff," and as such an erotic cartoon is conceptually jarring, like the sexuality in Cool World. I think for a lot of Americans, erotic animation would be like a pornographic stop-motion film using Raggedy Ann dolls.

Not that either the American or Japanese views are right or wrong. I sympathize with both views.

Anyvay, hentai has an interesting aspect: In Japan, it's illegal to show male or female genitals on-screen. The typical solution in hentai is to blur or pixellate the genitals, but that gets boring to watch, so hentai tends to show facial reactions more often than, say, American porn. As a result, hentai scenes tend to have a larger focus on character and reaction within the scene. American sex scenes tend to be random montages of faceless bodies grinding together; hentai scenes will show a clear progression of behavior as the characters explore each other. I've read that some people prefer hentai to live-action porn because of this (incidental!) focus on character.

(Caveat: I've seen little hentai and American porn, so I'm basing this partly on discussions I've read.)

Interesting trade-off; they can draw whomever's face they choose. In the U.S., in my equally limited exposure, you wouldn't -want- to ever see the faces of the people.

Not my cup of tea... but hey, whatever launchs your rocket...

The idea of cartoon characters having sex doesn't titillate me personally. It comes across as forced and gratuitous, where as in live-action the perception is that its more natural. I put it down to being an accquired taste like any other erotic art.

Sex will exist in all genres...animated or otherwise. It is up to personal choice whether to watch or not.

Ken's point about it seeming forced and gratuitous could really be applied to all pornography.

However, I do have an animated series called Mysteries of the Necronomicon on DVD somewhere.....it has sex scenes but they are not too gratuitous and are not simply levered into the series to provide tittilation. So.....there may be some tasteful erotic animation around.

It is really a personal choice, as in all things.

I cannot speak for Ken, but I think his approach was more that we as humans have natural reasons to connect. Cartoons don't, since they don't exist, and to make them exist we'd have to give them life; is there a great degree of acting (I was gonna say performance...phew) in hentai? From what I hear it is mostly loops that suffer from the idiosyncracies people jump on conventional anime for all the time...
