If you can't afford the new version of Flash, Swish is a good alternative and you are already familiar with it. While you're waiting to get your money together take a look over at Ebay and see if you can find an older version of Flash say, 5 or MX (Even 4 is good if you are only planning on doing animation with it.). Should be able to find some deals. Your folks should be able to make the buy for you on Ebay.
I know that's how I bought my first copy of Dreamweaver. There are some great forums out there for Flash and Swish. Flashkit.com would be a place to start it has a very active Swish forum, that can help you master some of the fine points. Swish can do almost as much as Flash it's scripting capabilities for interactivity are a little more limited.
