Vue Helps ILM Create Environments for Dead Man's Chest

e-on software announced that Industrial Light & Magic used Vue for the production of visual effects of Walt Disney's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST. ILM produced more than 60 shots of the Cannibal Island set using Vue 5 Infinite and xStream to model, texture, animate, light and render the different parts of the natural environment.

"We started playing around with Vue and it rapidly became our primary tool for big, exotic 3D environments," said John Knoll, visual effects supervisor at ILM.

Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that Helena Bonham Carter has joined the all-star cast of HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Bonham Carter will play Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius Black's cousin and a Death Eater, who is one of Lord Voldemort's followers.

The Dark Knight Returns with New Joker

As a follow up to last year's blockbuster BATMAN BEGINS, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' THE DARK KNIGHT, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. In addition to Christian Bale returning as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Warner Bros. has announced that Heath Ledger (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) has been cast as The Joker. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.

Sony Pictures Animation Books Rooms In Hotel Transylvania

Sony Pictures Animation has announced that HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA will be the companys third animated project, following Sony Pictures Animation, OPEN SEASON, on Sept. 29, 2006, and SURFS UP!, on June 8, 2007. All three films will be released by Columbia Pictures.

Sea-Monkeys Swimming to Theaters

Empire Pictures has signed an agreement with Transcience Corp. to develop an animated film and possible franchise from the infamous children's toy line, THE AMAZING LIVE SEA-MONKEYS, reports VARIETY. As part of the deal, Empire obtained entertainment rights to the line, which has been sold in more than 50 countries over the past 45 years.

Kidman Find Evil Side with Golden Compass

Nicole Kidman has signed on to play the villainous and glamorous Mrs. Coulter in New Line's adaptation of Phillip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS: THE GOLDEN COMPASS, reports VARIETY. The $150-million budgeted film is scheduled to start lensing in September at London's Shepperton Studios.

Chris Weitz will direct from his own script. British actress Dakota Blue Richards will make her major screen debut in the lead role of Lyra Belacqua, who must travel to a parallel universe to save her best friend from the forces of evil.

WB Wolfs Out with Benighted

Warner Bros. and Graham King's Initial Ent. Group have snatched the rights to Kit Whitfields werewolf novel BENIGHTED, according to VARIETY. King is set to produce with NARNIA helmer Andrew Adamson, whose eyeing the project as a directing job.

Originally published in the U.K. as BAREBACK, BENIGHTED is an alternate reality story where 90% of the population is werewolf and the other 10% must keep the peace during the full moon. Random House, which published in the U.K., is set to publish the book in the U.S. as well.

Miami Vice Displaces Pirates for Top Box Office Spot

Universal's MIAMI VICE (vfx by EntityFX, Illusion Arts and Eden FX) made off with a cool $25.7M to take top spot at the box office for its debut, bumping Disneys PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MANS CHEST (with vfx support from ILM) to second place, taking in $20.6 M for a treasure chest total now of $358.5M. Following in third was Fox's JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE) opening with $14.3M. Dropping slightly to forth place was all-CG MONSTER HOUSE scare fest from Sony and Sony Pictures Imageworks, taking in $11.6M for a two-week cume of $44M. All this competition pushed Warner Bros.

Brad Pitt Set for Aged Benjamin Button

Brad Pitt has agreed to star in the long-in-development Paramount/Warner Bros. production, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, reports VARIETY. The film will reunite Pitt with FIGHT CLUB director David Fincher and BABEL co-star Cate Blanchett. The project has been developed for more than a decade in several different incarnations.

DNA Prods. used modo from Luxology Llc. as one of its main modeling tools for the Warner Bros. 3D-animated feature, THE ANT BULLY, opening July 28, directed by John A. Davis (JIMMY NEUTRON). modo was chosen for its intuitive user interface and advanced toolset, and DNA used it to model a majority of the films assets, ranging from dynamic environmental features and plants to houses and cars.

Monster House Helmer Adapts Ember

MONSTER HOUSE director Gil Kenan is developing a live-action adaptation of THE CITY OF EMBER, based on the 2003 book by Jeanne DuPrau, reports SCI FI WIRE.

"It's science fiction, and that's all I'm going to say," Kenan said in a recent interview. "It's a post-apocalyptic children's film. It's going to be closely based on the novel."

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and CORPSE BRIDE screenwriter Caroline Thompson will pen the script with Playtone and Walden Media producing.

John A. Davis Eyes Heinlein’s Star Beast

ANT BULLY director John A. Davis divulged at Comic-Con that he is planning to direct a live-action/animated feature based on sci-fi author Robert Heinleins STAR BEAST, which is being developed at Warner Bros.

STAR BEAST takes place 400 years in the future and concerns a boy and his enormous pet that turns out to be a genius alien. The alien would be CG and animated by Davis DNA Prods. in Dallas, Texas, which animated Warner Bros. THE ANT BULLY (opening July 28, 2006) as well as the JIMMY NEUTRON feature and TV series.

Superman Returns Grosses More than $20 Million in IMAX 3-D

SUPERMAN RETURNS, which has grossed more than $290 million worldwide to date, is showing strong legs in IMAX theaters through its fourth weekend. The IMAX 3-D release earned approximately $1.4 million on 77 North American IMAX screens and an estimated $625,000 from 27 international IMAX screens between July 21-23 To date, the film has earned $20.7 million in IMAX theaters worldwide, becoming the fastest grossing digitally re-mastered IMAX release in the company's history for an impressive worldwide per screen average of $201,000.

Kelly Ripa Joins Fly Me To The Moon Cast

Kelly Ripa (ABC's LIVE WITH REGIS AND KELLY) joins an all-star cast for FLY ME TO THE MOON, the first ever, feature-length, computer-generated animated film, conceived and created entirely in 3-D. Exodus Film Group announced that Magnolia Pictures has acquired North America distribution rights to its CG-animated feature THE HERO OF COLOR CITY. The film is the tale of a colorful and diverse band of crayons as they strive to protect their magical, multi-hued homeland from an evil tyrant that threatens to rid their world of joy and color. The crayons of Color City each have personalities that humorously complement their color: Red sports a fiery attitude, Blue is cool, calm and collected and Yellow, the heroine, is the most timid and fearful crayon in town.

Iran Government Produces Animation, Khomeini Film Coming

The Iranian Center for Development of Documentary and Experimental Cinema is set to produce short and feature animation in an effort to revitalize the industry in Iran, reports IRAN DAILY.

Shahram Safajou, director of the public relations office of the center, said, that under the new policies, the projects will maintain an independent identity and embrace the rich cultural-artistic background of the Iranian animators.

Longoria Plays Dead Fiance

Eva Longoria (DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES), Paul Rudd (THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN) and Lake Bell (SURFACE) are set to star in the supernatural comedy, HOW I MET MY BOYFRIEND'S DEAD FIANCE, VARIETY reports. The Gold Circle Films project will start filming Aug. 24, 2006, in Hollywood, with Jeff Lowell making his directorial debut. Lowell's script follows a female psychic (Bell) who falls in love with a skeptic (Rudd), while the ghost of his dead fiance, played by Longoria, tear them apart.

Comic-Con Sees Stars, 2D Officially Back at Disney

In an animation panel, Kevin Koch, head of the Animation Guild, said that a new 2D film, titled, THE FROG PRINCESS, is in development at Disney. Moreover, Eric Goldberg, who has returned to Disney to work on animated shorts, said that LITTLE MERMAID directors Ron Clements and John Musker will be helming the film. Additionally, Chuck Williams will be heading up a shorts programing at the Mouse House.

Exodus Film Group announced that Christian Slater, Steve Buscemi and John Cleese will lend their voices to Exodus' CG-animated feature comedy, IGOR. The Weinstein Co. (TWC) has an all encompassing distribution deal for the film including North America as well as representing international rights. TWC recently returned from the Cannes Film Festival having sold the film into most foreign territories.
