Universal Tags Boom! Studios Comic

Universal Pictures has tapped Carey Malloy to adapt Boom! Studios' horror comicbook TAG for the big screen, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Marc Platt will produce alongside Ross Richie and Andrew Cosby of Boom Ent. Inc.

Written by Keith Giffen and drawn by Kody Chamberlain, the comic tells the story of an average Joe who while walking down the street one night is tagged by a stranger, giving him a pagan curse that makes him begin to decompose before his eyes.

Donna Langley, Jeff Kirschenbaum and David Ortiz will shepherd for the studio.

Weinstein To Bring Japanese Nightmare to States

The Weinstein Co. has bought the North America, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand distribution rights to the Japanese supernatural thriller, NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Arclight Films subsidiary Easternlight Films had been handling the rights.

The film, written and directed by Shinya Tsukamoto (TETSUO, THE IRON MAN), follows a female detective, who looks into a pair of suicides where both victims dialed zero on their mobile phones right before their deaths. During the investigation, the detective meets a man who can enter people's dreams.

Weinstein Books Acquires Alex and the Ironic Gentleman

Weinstein Books has acquired U.S. rights to two books in a new series for young readers with a film option on the novels and a rolling option for all print prequels and sequels. The first book, ALEX AND THE IRONIC GENTLEMAN, by writer/performer Adrienne Kress, will be published in fall 2007 on Weinstein Books' debut list.

Raimi Steps Into The Shadow

Sam Raimi is set to produce, and possibly direct, a new version of THE SHADOW for Columbia Pictures, VARIETY reports. Raimi will work with Josh Donen of his Buckaroo Ent. on the project.

Created by Walter B. Gibson, THE SHADOW started life as a pulp novel series in the 1930s, which adapted into the now legendary CBS radio show, which starred Orson Welles. The superhero who can bend the minds of his enemies has since been featured in comics, books, television and multiple film versions, including Universal's 1994 rendition with Alec Baldwin.

Apocalypto Conquers Penguins for Weekend Box Office

Mayans trumped penguins as Mel Gibson's epic movie, APOCALYPTO, from Buena Vista, debuted in first place (with vfx from Radium, Asylum, LOOK! Effects, Svengali FX), taking in $15M for the period ended Dec. 10, 2006. Warner Bros.' HAPPY FEET (the first 3D-animated feature from Animal Logic) shuffled back to the No. 2 position with $12.9M and a month-long take of $137.9M. Debuting in third place was Sony's THE HOLIDAY (vfx by Furious FX & Snow Business Int.) with $12.8M. Sony's CASINO ROYALE, with vfx by Peerless Camera, grabbed $8.9M for fourth place, bringing its cume to $150M.

Abrams Confirmed as Star Trek XI Director

In front of investors at the CSFB media conference, Viacom ceo Philippe Dauman confirmed that J.J. Abrams has signed a deal to direct the next big screen STAR TREK adventure for Paramount, reports VARIETY.

"We're revitalizing it in a new and interesting way," Dauman said.

Abrams will also co-write the script with MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE III scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.

Action Figures to Star in Live-Action Film

Taking a page from Trey Parker and Matt Stone's TEAM AMERICA, Swipe Films will produce a live-action satire titled, JACKBOOTS ON WHITEWALL, using action figures as the actors, according to VARIETY.

Directed by newcomer Edward McHenry, the alternative history spoof ponders what would things be like if the Germans won the Battle of Britain and later lost to the Scots.

Sun Animatics Starts Animated Feature Ghatothakach

Hyderabad-based Sun Animatics India Pvt. Ltd. is producing an animated feature-length film called, GHATOTHKACH, in a mix of traditional and CGI animation.

GHATOTHKACH is based upon the live-action film, MAYABAZAR, a big hit when it was released March 27, 1957. MAYABAZAR, a block buster at that time, created a benchmark for the filmmakers in India.

One of Canadas most beloved sports personalities, Bob Cole, was in Studio B Prods. Inc. recently doing voice-over work for a new animated four-minute short the Vancouver studio is producing called, CLANCY WITH THE PUCK. Cole has been working on Canadas longest running hockey telecast since 1969, HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA, and is known and loved by millions.

Puppet Aladdin Goes Into Production in Morocco

Agadir, Morocco-based C Brothers has started production on ALADDIN, the first Berber-language puppet animated film, reports VARIETY. Newcomer Ebhheim Abdeni will direct.

The film follows a little boy who challenges forest genies to win a book of knowledge. An Arabic-dubbed version will also be made.

C Brothers is owned by a trio of brother Brahim, Hussein and Rachid Chkiri. The company has produced on average 10 direct-to-DVD films a year. These low-budget productions are often edutainment products for the local market.

Basque 3D Film Cristobal Molon Arrives in Theaters

CRISTOBAL MOLON, a new animated film produced by EIKEN Irusoin, Dibulitoon Studio, ETB and distributed by Barton Films, premiered in theaters on Dec. 5, 2006, reports EITV24.com. Co-directed by Aitor Arregi and Iñigo Berasategi, the film combines 3D CG and models.

CRISTOBAL MOLON is the story of the fight between two empires. Pradería's superiority is threatened by the unlimited ambition of its neighbor Boñigonia.

Warner Bros.' HAPPY FEET (the first 3D-animated feature from Animal Logic) is on its way to setting a new record for CG-animated features, as it holds its No. 1 position for three consecutive weeks, as it maintained its slim lead over Sony's CASINO ROYALE throughout the period ended Dec. 3, 2006. The last CG-animated films to lead domestic box office three weekends straight were DreamWork's 2004 films, SHARK TALE (2004) and SHREK 2. HAPPY FEET collected $17.5M to up its three-week total to $121.5M.

Barker Resurrects Poe's Ghost for Teens

Clive Barker and Walden Media are partnering to create an original young-adult thriller featuring the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Barker will develop the story and produce. Anthony DiBlasi and Joseph Daley are set to exec produce via Barker's Seraphim Films.

The story will follow a group of teenagers who, when trying to discover what happened during the last two weeks of Edgar Allen Poe's life, accidentally unleash Poe's nightmares on Earth.

Doc With Animated Trial Reenactments to Open Sundance

Brett Morgen, who directed such documentaries as ON THE ROPES and THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE, is bringing the trial of the Chicago Eight to life via motion-capture animation provided by Curious Pictures. The film, with the animated segments comprising a third, will open the Sundance Film Festival 2007.

Huhu Studio Inks Biblical Deal

Huhu Studio -- through Wise Giant Enterprise Ltd., which it founded in 2005 -- has inked a $25 million production deal on a six-part animation series that centers on the epic stories of the Bible. The six well-known Bible stories will be made into 3D animated features. The deal was made possible through funding from iGlobe Treasury, a fund sponsored by the New Zealand's government's Venture Investment Fund (VIF).

Happy Feet Taps Another Strong IMAX Performance

HAPPY FEET: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE carried momentum from its record-breaking opening weekend with a strong performance through the Thanksgiving holiday, posting the highest grossing second weekend ever in IMAX theaters for a DMR release. On 79 IMAX screens, the 3D-animated feature made at Animal Logic contributed an impressive $2.25 million of the film's weekend total of $37 million. The cumulative domestic IMAX total now stands at approximately $6 million, with the film's overall domestic total topping $100 million.

HAPPY FEET collected $50.6M to up its two-week total to $99.2M, while the 21st Bond movie grabbed $44.8M to run its cume to $94M. With vfx by Peerless Camera, CASINO ROYALE is proving to be a global hit, adding another $128.7M to its worldwide coffers of $222.7M, and on its way to possibly becoming the #1 all-time grossing 007 movie.

Hot Bollywood Director Moves into Animation

Bollywood's hot young director Karan Johar has announced that he will make an animated feature, reports APUNKACHOICE.

Karan plans to make the animated feature like most popular Bollywood films, including songs and high drama. Suresh Nair will pen the script with production set to start early next year.

"Now, all I want is a good technical team," said Karan.

New Line Brews Nicholas Flamel Deal

New Line Cinema and reality producer Mark Bennet have teamed to produce Michael Scott's fantasy series, THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL, into what they hope will be a six-picture franchise, reports VARIETY.

Burnett, the producer of SURVIVOR, used his own money to buy the rights to the book series at auction. The producers are looking for a screenwriter to adapt THE ALCHEMYST, the first title in a series to be published by Random House Children's Books next May.

Ice Age Has a DVD Meltdown

ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN, from Blue Sky Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Animation, which grossed an exceptional $193.4 million domestically, arrives Nov. 21, 2006, on DVD (Twentieth Century Fox Home Ent., $29.98). This pre-Thanksgiving positioning for Black Friday, of course, is traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year.

"We had tremendous success four years ago with a similar release date for the original ICE AGE,'" said Steve Feldstein, svp marketing communications for Fox Home Ent. The first ICE AGE sold more than 14 million units.

Happy Feet Dances to Record IMAX Animated Opening

IMAX Corp. and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that HAPPY FEET: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE contributed $2.4 million of the film's $41.5 million domestic gross on its opening weekend, representing the strongest IMAX opening ever for an animated title. The IMAX gross came from 79 IMAX theaters, posting a three-day per-screen average of approximately $30,000 from Nov.17 through Nov. 19, 2006. HAPPY FEET has been digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology.
