Disney/Pixar Interested in John Carter of Mars

Disney/Pixar is in final talks to pick up the film rights to Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels JOHN CARTER OF MARS series, according to the trades. Previously, the series was set up at Paramount as a live-action project with Robert Rodriguez, then SKY CAPTAIN Kerry Conran and finally Jon Favreau attached to direct. Before that, the property was at Disney during the '90s when Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted to make it into an animated feature before the project was set up as a live-action project for John McTiernan.

Night at the Museum Stopped by Stomp

Fox's NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM couldn't overcome Screen Gem's debut of STOMP THE YARD, which halted the Ben Stiller comedy's three-week box office reign over the MLK holiday weekend ended Jan. 15, 2007. According to estimates, STOMP THE YARD recorded $26.4M, pushing NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM into second place with $21.5M. With vfx by Rhythm & Hues, Rainmaker, The Orphanage and Weta Digital, among others, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM now has a cume of $190.1M. Third place belonged to Sony's THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, which collected $11M for a five-week cume of $138.3M.

Murphy Journeys to The Other Side

Brittany Murphy will star in the long-in-development writing and directing debut of veteran producer and story editor David Michaels titled THE OTHER SIDE, reports SCI FI WIRE. The film will take place on a weird, remote island where nothing is as it seems.

"It's very intriguing," Murphy said in an interview while promoting her new film, THE DEAD GIRL. "It has an awesome cast. Giovanni Ribisi is signed on, and there's Ryan Gosling and Anjelica Huston and all sorts of really neat people."

Rob Cohen To Helm Mummy 3

Universal Pictures is negotiating with Rob Cohen (XXX) to helm THE MUMMY 3, reports VARIETY. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have penned the screenplay, with a plot that is being kept secret at this point. Stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have had talks in the past about coming aboard a third installment.

Jay Leno & Jennifer Coolidge Join Igor Voice Cast

Late night talk show host Jay Leno and perennial siren and Groundlings comedy troupe veteran Jennifer Coolidge have joined the voice cast of Exodus Film Group's CG-animated feature comedy IGOR. Leno will voice the role of King Malbert, Malaria's Machiavellian ruler while Coolidge provides the voice of Sybil, the village vixen. They join Jeremy Piven, Molly Shannon, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese and Christian Slater in the animated feature.

Shyamalan To Adapt Nickelodeon's Avatar

Coming off the lackluster performance of LADY IN THE WATER, M. Night Shyamalan has signed on to write, direct and produce the live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's popular animated series, AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER, reports the trades. Paramount Pictures' MTV Films and Nick Movies, who are producing, plans to live-action adaptation into a trilogy with Shyamalan.

The film will be the first Shyamalan has directed in which he has not written an original screenplay. He previously co-wrote 1999's STUART LITTLE.

Avatar to Begin Principal Photography in April

It's finally official: James Cameron begins principal photography on Twentieth Century Fox's AVATAR -- his first feature since the Oscar-winning TITANIC -- in April for a summer 2009 release, the studio announced. THE NEW YORK TIMES additionally reports that the budget will be $200 million.

Night at the Museum Still Tops Box Office

For the third straight week, Fox's NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM ruled the box office for the weekend period ended Jan. 7, 2007. With vfx by Rhythm & Hues, Rainmaker, The Orphanage and Weta Digital, among others, NIGHT grossed added another $23.7M to its impressive total of $163.8M. Holding second again was Sony's THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, which collected $12.8M for a four-week cume of $124M. Shooting up to third place in wide release was Universal's CHILDREN OF MEN (with vfx from Double Negative and Framestore CFC), grabbing $10.1M for a cume of $11.8M.

Arthur Out at Oscars, In for Sequels

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has confirmed that ARTHUR AND THE INVISIBLES has been disqualified for the Oscar's Animated Feature category. The Academy ruled that the Luc Besson directed film does not have the required amount of animation (75% of the film's running time) to compete in the category. Due to this decision, only 15 films have been ruled eligible, which drops the number of nomination slots to three.

His Dark Materials 2 Gets Scribe

Hossein Amini (THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) has been hired to adapt THE SUBTLE KNIFE, the second book in Phillip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS series, according to VARIETY. Chris Weitz is in production on the $150 million adaptation of the first book, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, which is set to hit theaters in time for the holidays.

Fox Boasts Record $3.56 Billion at the Box Office in 2006

Fox Filmed Ent. reached an industry-high $3,559,521,971 in worldwide box office for 2006. This is the biggest worldwide box office gross for any slate of pictures in the history of the movie business, according to the studio.

The milestone was a combined result of strong contributions from all of Fox's existing production divisions, which delivered a diverse slate of pictures from tentpole films such as the animated ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND.

Indy IV to Start Production in 2007

In a long-awaited announcement from Lucasfilm, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg revealed that the fourth installment of INDIANA JONES would begin production in June 2007. Harrison Ford returns in his role as the daring Dr. Jones for the new adventure. The film will be produced by Lucasfilm Ltd., directed by Spielberg and released by Paramount Pictures throughout the world in May 2008. The screenplay has been written by David Koepp.

Fox's NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM continued its grip on first place through the four-day New Year's holiday period ended Jan. 1, 2007. With vfx by Rhythm & Hues, Rainmaker, The Orphanage and Weta Digital, among others, NIGHT grossed $49.2M, bringing its two-week total to $127.2M. Holding second was Sony's THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, which collected $25.4M for a three-week cume of $104.5M. CafeFX Does a Disappearing Act for Eragon

CafeFX was called upon to create the vfx in Twentieth Century's ERAGON (shortlisted for a VFX Oscar), in which the sorcerer Durza makes his quick getaways by transporting from the face of the planet.

"Durza dematerializes twice within the story, under two sets of circumstances," said CafeFX visual effects producer David Van Dyke. "So we used two separate effects for each instance. Once is his normal, everyday teleportation, and the other is done while he is wounded, which is slower and more elaborate."

Imaginary Forces (IF) launches into the holiday season with main titles for WE ARE MARSHALL (opening Dec. 22) and CHARLOTTE'S WEB. Happy Feet Grosses $10 million in IMAX

IMAX Corp. and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that HAPPY FEET: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE has grossed $10.6 million since premiering on Nov. 17. The film animated by Animal Logic opened on 79 domestic IMAX screens and will ultimately play on a total of 28 international IMAX screens. HAPPY FEET has been digitally re-mastered with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The film's total worldwide gross in both conventional and IMAX theaters is now nearly $200 million.

Parasomnia Wakes for Production

Rising Storm Prods. has started shooting horror thriller, PARASOMNIA, reports VARIETY. William Malone (HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL) has written the screenplay and will direct the film, which stars Cherilyn Wilson, Dylan Purcell, Patrick Kilpatrick, Jeffrey Combs, Timothy Bottoms, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Jeff Doucette and Dov Tiefenbach. Jane Hamilton is producing with Jon Jannotta serving as exec producer.

The story follows a woman who suffers from parasomnia, a medical condition that makes her sleep for extended periods of time, only waking occasionally in short bursts.
