Lost & Hellboy Actors Sell the Dead

Dominic Monaghan (LOST) and Ron Perlman (HELLBOY) have signed on to producer-actor Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix's horror film I SELL THE DEAD, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Monaghan has the role of an 18th century gravedigger and Perlman will play his priest. Fessenden (BROKEN FLOWERS) will also play Monaghan's London corpse trading partner. Angus Scrimm, who is best known as the Tall Man in the PHANTASM horror series, is in final negotiations to play the aristocratic doctor who buys the dead bodies.

Shyamalan Happening at Fox

M. Night Shyamalan has set up his next film THE HAPPENING at 20th Century Fox, reports VARIETY. It will start filming in Philadelphia this August with June 2008 penciled in as the release date. Shyamalan will also produce with Sam Mercer and Barry Mendel, who produced Shyamalan's THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE.

The R-rated, $57 million-budgeted film is a paranoid thriller where a family must flee from a natural emergency that threatens Earth.

Massive Used On Oscar-Winning Happy Feet

Massive Software's AI-driven animation system was utilized by Animal Logic for Happy Feet, which recently won the Academy Award for best animated feature. Using Massive, Animal Logic filled the screen with enough happy-footed "extras" to populate several Busby Berkeley showstoppers. The Warner Bros. Pictures feature represented the first 3D-animated project by both director George Miller and the Australia-based Animal Logic.

Wild Hogs Rides to Top of the Box Office

Buena Vista's road comedy with Tim Allen and John Travolta, WILD HOGS, debuted at the top of the box office chart for the weekend ended March 4, 2007, racking up $39.6M. David Fincher's gripping but cerebral ZODIAC bowed in second with $13.3M for Paramount (with vfx from Digital Domain and Matte World Digital). Third place belonged to last week's winner, GHOST RIDER, which raced home with another $11.5M (with vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks). The Sony release now has a cume of $94.8M.

Fox Deals for Devil You Know

Twentieth Century Fox has acquired THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, a live-action film based upon the children's book by Nathan Hale, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Shawn Levy (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM) will produce through his Fox-based 21 Laps shingle with Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein.

Steve Bencich and Ron Friedman (OPEN SEASON, CHICKEN LITTLE and BROTHER BEAR) will adapt Devil from the book as a family comedy feature.

Marvel Secures Iron Man Funding

Marvel Ent. Inc. announced that it has satisfied all funding requirements under the company's previously announced $525 million non-recourse credit facility and has begun borrowing from the facility to finance its first self-produced and financed feature film, IRON MAN. Additionally, Marvel has finalized distribution deals for IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK in the international territories for which it controls distribution rights. Paramount Pictures will distribute IRON MAN and Universal Pictures will distribute THE INCREDIBLE HULK in North America and all other international territories.

Saw II Helmer to Remake Scanners

Dimension Films has inked a deal with SAW II helmer Darren Lynn Bousman to direct a remake of David Cronenberg's 1981 cult classic SCANNERS, reports VARIETY. BLADE and BATMAN BEGINS writer David Goyer is writing the screenplay.

The original film had a scientist infiltrating a renegade group of telepathics called scanners, who are using their abilities as deadly weapons.

Dimension co-chairman Bob Weinstein is overseeing the project and production is set to begin in early 2008.

Double Negative Adds CG Blood and Gore to Hot Fuzz

Double Negative recently completed vfx work of 190 shots on the new action comedy HOT FUZZ, which went straight to the top of the U.K. and Ireland box office chart in its opening weekend ended Feb. 18, 2007. The film opens April 13 in the U.S.

It's Official: J.J. Abrams To Direct Star Trek Feature

Paramount Pictures has officially announced that J.J. Abrams will direct the next STAR TREK feature.

The team behind the film will include Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III) who wrote the screenplay and will exec produce with Bryan Burk. Abrams and LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof will produce. The film will begin shooting this fall for a Christmas Day 2008 release.

Hulk To Stomp into Toronto

Marvel Studios will film THE INCREDIBLE HULK in Toronto, reports THE ASSOCIATE PRESS. The film will be directed by Louis Leterrier (TRANSPORTER, UNLEASHED). Production is set to begin in the summer and last for four months. The studio still has yet to announce the cast.

Nick Movies has purchased Joe Aucoin's comedy fantasy spec, UNICORN, according to VARIETY. John Jacobs will produce via his Smart Ent. The plot follows the trials and tribulations of a workaholic single father in NYC after his five-year-old becomes obsessed with having a unicorn as a pet. Smart Ent.'s Colin O'Reilly is exec producing.

King Options Dark Tower to Lost Creators

Stephen King announced at the New York Comic Con that LOST co-creators J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof will adapt his DARK TOWERS series. For years King had turned down others who wanted to adapt the book even Frank Darabont, who previously adapted King's THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE. Abrams and Lindelof approached King, who is a big fan of LOST, with the pitch to adapt TOWERS. He agreed selling them the option for $19, which is a reference to the book.

Ghost Rider Still On Top

Despite slipping 55% leading up to the Academy Awards on Sunday, Sony's GHOST RIDER (with vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks) remained number one at the box office for the second consecutive week. For the week ended Feb. 25, 2007, the Marvel comic adaptation with Nicolas Cage scored $20M for a cume of $79M. Debuting in second place with $14.6M was THE NUMBER 23, the thriller from New Line starring Jim Carey (with vfx by Intelligent Creatures). Slipping to third in its second week was Buena Vista's BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA (with vfx from Weta Digital), which took home $14.1M and now has $46.8M.

Area 52 Fillm Rights Acquired

Benderspink has acquired film rights to AREA 52, the SF comicbook by Brian Haberlin, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

The story features a group of misfit soldiers stationed at a remote military base in Antarctica who learn that they are guarding a storage facility where top-secret, otherworldly technologies and weapons are kept and analyzed. A murderous alien, hatched from something believed to be an artifact, stalks the soldiers.

Chris Bender and J.C. Spink will produce AREA 52 while Quattro partner Jim Strader. Haberlin will exec produce.

Warner Bros. To Develop Justice League Feature

Warner Bros. Pictures has hired writing duo Kiernan and Michele Mulroney (MR. & MRS. SMITH) to script THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA as a live-action feature, according to VARIETY, which would combine some of DC Comics most iconic superheroes. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter are all members of the Justice League.

Hollywood design studio Picture Mill created a colorful, high-voltage, show-stopping, curtain call for the main title sequence of DREAMGIRLS, nominated for eight Oscars, from Paramount/DreamWorks. The concept was to celebrate the performances of stars and supporting cast, much like the rising curtain at the end of a Broadway musical.

THE 2006 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED SHORT FILMS program, distributed by Magnolia Pictures, opened at #44 on the box office chart, with $128,569 on 38 screens for a per-screen average of $3,383. NOMINATED SHORT FILMS is currently playing at the Nuart in L.A. and opens Friday, Feb. 23, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Ghost Rider Sets President’s Day Record Ablaze

Sonys adaptation of the Marvel comic, GHOST RIDER, starring Nicolas Cage, with vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks, set a Presidents Day record with $52M over the four-day weekend ended Feb. 19, 2007, which is also the best opening so far this year. Opening in second place was Buena Vistas BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA, with vfx from Weta Digital, which took home $28.5M. Dropping to third was last weeks box office champ, NORBIT, the Eddie Murphy comedy from Paramount/DreamWorks, which added $19.9M to its two-week cume of $62M.

Yowza Digital Helps Animate Chicago 10 Documentary

Toronto-based animation studio Yowza Digital Inc. recreated the infamous riot that erupted during the 1968 Democratic National Convention for the new documentary film CHICAGO 10. Written and directed by Brett Morgen (THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE, ON THE ROPES), CHICAGO 10 was chosen as the opening night film at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

Shemaroo Forays Into 2D Animated Musical Film

Mumbai-based home entertainment company Shemaroo (www.shermaroo.com) is set to release its first feature-length 2D musical film, GHATOTHKACH MASTER OF MAGIC, in the near future, reports BUSINESSOFCINEMA.COM. The movie, Based on Indian mythology, is directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao.

The film revolves around the story of Ghatothkach (son of Bhim and Hidimba), and his escapades. The movie features Bollywood style magic, action, romance, comedy, fantasy and some foot-tapping songs.

Narnia Sequel Starts Shooting

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN, the second live-action/CG movie adaptation of C.S. Lewis' beloved series of literary classics, began principal photography Feb. 12 on location in Auckland, New Zealand. The production, once again a joint venture between the Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, continues the franchise that commenced with the very successful, Oscar-winning 2005 release, THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, which went on to earn more than $745 in worldwide theatrical release.

Carter Smith to Helm The Ruins Film

Music video director Carter Smith will helm the horror film, THE RUINS, for DreamWorks Pictures and Red Hour Films, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld are producing for Red Hour.

RUINS, based on the bestselling novel by Scott Smith (A SIMPLE PLAN), is set in the jungles of the Yucatan, where something evil lives among the ruins.

Red Hour optioned the then-unpublished book in May 2004 and had Smith write the screenplay. Shooting begins in late May in Australia. Chris Bender is also producing.
