Golden Network Picks Up Three Thai Toons

Hong Kong-based distribution firm Golden Network has acquired a new late of Thai animation titles, reports VARIETY.

MID ROAD GANG is an animated animal comedy following a pack of stray dogs. The film is being presented at the Cannes Market. It was co-directed by Pantham Thongsang and Somkiat Vithuranich.

Golden Network has also obtained the rights to the MID ROAD spin-off, DUCK FIGHT, which deals with kung fu ducks and traditional medicine. Pornchai "Mr Pink" Hongrattanaporn is directing with Thongsang producing.

Spider-Man 3 Web Blasts Its Way to Record Opening

The summer season has exploded in high fashion with the opening of Columbia Pictures' SPIDER-MAN 3, which spun a North American gross of $151M and a worldwide gross of $231M for a total of $382M for the weekend period ended May 6, 2007. It's the highest opening ever in movie history. Playing in a record 4,252 domestic locations, the film took in an average of $35,540 per screen. The film also unspooled at more than 8,900 locations abroad.

Spider-Man 3 Spins Largest Opening in IMAX History

Contributing to SPIDER-MAN 3's record-breaking opening of $151 million was the largest IMAX bow as well. The blockbuster from Columbia Pictures grossed an estimated $6.3 million overall on 84 domestic and 34 international IMAX screens and $4.8 million domestically from May 4-6, marking the largest opening in IMAX's 40-year history. The movie also broke the record for IMAX's largest single-day worldwide total at $2.2 million and posted an impressive domestic opening weekend per-screen average of $57,147.

DreamWorks Loves Peter Jackson's Bones

DreamWorks Studios, in association with Film 4, has acquired THE LOVELY BONES, Peter Jackson's adaptation of the Alice Sebold bestselling novel.

Jackson will direct the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. Carolynne Cunningham, Jackson, Walsh and Aimee Peyronnet will serve as producers. Exec producing will be Film 4's Tessa Ross, Ken Kamins and Jim Wilson.

Liv Tyler Rings in New Role in Hulk

Liv Tyler (LORD OF THE RINGS) has signed on to play Betty Ross in Marvel Studios' THE INCREDIBLE HULK, said THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Ed Norton is playing Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk) with Louis Leterrier directing. Avi Arad, Gale Anne Hurd and Kevin Feige are producing.

Tyler sets into the role of Banner's scientist love interesting, which was played by Jennifer Connelly in Ang Lee's HULK.

Lensing will start in the summer in Toronto. Universal Pictures will distribute.

Jim Van Wyck, David Maisel, Arad and Stan Lee are on as exec producers.

Deuce Bigalow Director to Helm Shrek 4

DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO director Mike Mitchell is in talks to helm DreamWorks Animation's SHREK 4, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The script, which deals with the reason why Shrek left the land of ogres to live by himself in the swamp, was originally written by Tim Sullivan and was rewritten by Josh Klausner.

DreamWorks Animation's Jeffrey Katzenberg, Bill Damaschke, Kristine Belson and Chris Kuser are shepherding.

Indian Filmmaker PNC Embarks on 5 Features with Motion Pixel in U.S.

Filmmaker Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC) announced today (May 4, 2007) it will produce five 3D animated full-length Bollywood feature films at an outlay of $25 million in collaboration with Florida's animation company, Motion Pixel Corp. (MPC), reports The ECONOMIC TIMES.

Motion Pixel Corp.'s animation studio Estudio Flex in Costa Rica will handle the animation work while PNC will handle the scripting, soundtrack and marketing of the films, which would feature voice-overs by some of the Bollywood's top stars.

Dark Horse's Ark Sets Sail at Columbia

Columbia Pictures has obtained the film rights to the Dark Horse Comics graphic novel THE ARK, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Original Film's Neal Moritz will produce alongside Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson. Comic creator Mark Verheiden will pen the screenplay. Debuting as part of the Dark Horse Presents anthology series in 1998, the series retells the Biblical account of Noah's ark combining it with UFOs.

Spider-Man 3 to Get Simultaneous IMAX Release

When SPIDER-MAN 3 hits theaters on May 4, it will open simultaneously in IMAX theaters via THE IMAX EXPERIENCE brand.

"The simultaneous IMAX release of SPIDER-MAN 3 allows us to celebrate one of the most anticipated motion picture events of the year in an exciting event format," said Rory Bruer, president, Domestic Distribution, Sony Pictures Releasing. Stomp the Yard Director Helming Frank Miller's Ronin

Warner Bros. has obtained the rights to Frank Miller's RONIN, reports VARIETY. Sylvain White (STOMP THE YARD) is set to helm.

In the DC Comics-published graphic novel, a ronin is shamed by the death of his master at the hands of a shape-shifting demon in 13th century Japan. But when his master's sword is uncovers in 21st century New York, the ronin and the demon are resurrected to fight for ownership of the mythical sword.

Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari and Nick Wechsler are the producers along with Craig Flores and Miller as exec producers.

Blade II Baddie Takes Villainous Role in Hellboy 2

Luke Goss, who played the villain Nomak in Guillermo del Toro's BLADE II, has joined the cast of the director's HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY for Universal Pictures, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER says.

Goss will join Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and David Hyde Pierce and Doug Jones (who share the role of Abe Sapien). Goss has taken the role of Prince Nuada, a murder leader who leads an army of creatures onto Earth from the underworld.

Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson are producers. Del Toro and HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola penned the screenplay.

Winx Club Charters Big Screen Adaptation

Rainbow CGI, RAI Fiction and RAI Cinema have announced that WINX CLUB will make the jump to the big screen in WINX CLUB, IL SEGRETO DI UN REGNO (WINX CLUB, THE SECRET OF A KINGDOM), according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The 25 million Euros ($34.13 million) budget will make it the most expensive animated feature in Italian history.

The series follows five teenage fairies that battle evil witches who want to destroy their club.

Iginio Straffi, founder of production company Rainbow CGI, will direct the film.

A Calm Disturbia at the Box Office

DISTURBIA held the top spot at the box office for the third consecutive weekend, taking in a tepid $9M for the period ended April 29, 2007, as everyone awaits the onslaught of SPIDER-MAN 3 next weekend. So far DISTURBIA has provided Paramount/DreamWorks a cume of $52.1M (with vfx by Halon and Pacific Title). Debuting in second and third place was Buena Vista's THE INVISIBLE (vfx by Gray Matter FX) and Paramount's NEXT (vfx by Digital Dream, Look Effects and Comen VFX) with $7.7M and $7.1M. Fourth place belonged to New Line's FRACTURE with $6.8M for a two-week tally of $21M.

McDowell Smarts Up for Descent Director's Doomsday

Rogue Pictures has added Malcolm McDowell to the cast of apocalyptic thriller DOOMSDAY, which is being directed by THE DESCENT's writer/director Neil Marshall. McDowell will play Kane, the genius scientist who is an expert on the deadly Reaper virus, which an elite group of specialists are trying to find a cure for. The cast also includes Rhona Mitra and Bob Hoskins. The film is in its final month of shooting.

Weinsteins Kicks Into Asia with Tarantino Remake, Production Fund

The Weinstein Co. and Goldman Sachs are forming a $285 million fund to make films with Asian themes, insiders say. One of the projects will be a Quentin Tarantino-directed remake of the kung fu classic, COME DRINK WITH ME. The fund will also support the production, acquisition and marketing of approximately 31 Asian productions -- 21 theatrical features and 10 direct-to-videos -- over the next six years.

Csupo Over The Moon for Terabithia Follow-Up

Gabor Csupo has lined up his follow-up to his first live-action film, BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA, which has grossed $108 million worldwide, reports VARIETY. His second directorial effort will be another adaptation of a family fantasy novel, this time based on Elizabeth Goudge's THE LITTLE WHITE HORSE.

The film, titled THE MOON PRINCESS, follows a 13-year-old girl into a magical realm where she must rid an ancient curse. Lucy Shuttleworth and Graham Alborough adapted the script and Colin Firth has signed on as the girl's eccentric uncle.

Frog Princess Finds Its Dream Girl?

Walt Disney Studios is in final talks with DREAMGIRLS star Anika Noni Rose to lend her voice to the lead character in its 2D animated feature, THE FROG PRINCESS, reports several news sources. Walt Disney had no official comment on the casting rumor. Ever since the announcement of the project many names, including Tyra Banks, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, have been rumored for the role.

Additionally, E! ONLINE is reporting that Disney is considering changing the title of the film to THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, as well as the lead character Maddy's name.

Newcomer, FRACTURE, the thriller with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling from New Line, bowed in second with $11M. Following in third with $7.67M was Paramount/DreamWorks BLADES OF GLORY. Universal and Imagine Ent. are set to remake the 1970 sci-fi epic COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, reports VARIETY. Ron Howard is interested in directing and Brian Grazer will produce.

Jason Rothenberg has been tapped to adapt the first three novels in D.F. Jones' COLOSSUS series into one film. The story deals with a scientist who creates a supercomputer for the government, which then decides the best way to protect the citizens is to take absolute control over everything.

LOST star Matthew Fox is in closing talks to take on the role of Racer X in Larry and Andy Wachowski's big screen adaptation of anime classic, SPEED RACER, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Additionally, Australian actor Kick Gurry (Alex Proyas' GARAGE DAYS) is up for the role of Sparky, Speed's spacey mechanic. Fox and Gurry would join a cast that includes Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman.

Silver Surfer Sounds Like Lawrence Fishburne

For the live-action summer tentpole, FANTASTIC 4: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER, 20th Century Fox has secured Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX) to lend his voice to the Silver Surfer, reports the trades. Doug Jones (HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH) is providing the performance capture.

Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis will all be returning to the live-action sequel. Weta Digital is the chief visual effects house on the film, which is set for release June 15, 2007.

Harry Potter 5 Finale on IMAX in 3-D

IMAX Corp. and Warner Bros. Pictures announced that select scenes of the IMAX DMR version of HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX would be digitally converted into An IMAX 3-D Experience. IMAX Corp. plans to use its proprietary 2D to 3D conversion technology to transform approximately 20 minutes at the end of the film. HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX will be released in IMAX theaters and conventional theaters on July 13, 2007, and Warner Bros. Pictures will be the exclusive distributor of the film to IMAX theatres worldwide.
