Die Hard 4 Director Free to Remake Escape From New York

New Line Cinema is in final talks with Len Wiseman (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) to direct its remake of John Carpenter's cult classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, reports the trades. 300 star Gerard Butler has already signed on as the new Snake Plissken. Neal Moritz is the producer.

Ken Nolan (BLACK HAWK DOWN) is adapting the script, which sees convict/ war hero Plissken sent into a futuristic Manhattan, which has been transformed into a maximum-security prison, to save the U.S. President after Air Force One is shot down by the inmates.

The Cell Helmer Returns for The Unforgettable

After making the visually innovative thriller THE CELL in 2000, Tarsem Singh has not made a film for a major studio since. Now the director has signed on to make the sci-fi thriller, THE UNFORGETTABLE, for Warner Bros., according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Basil Iwanyk, David Goyer and Jason Hall are producing.

Based on the Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. videogame THE CONDEMNED: CRIMINAL ORIGINS, the script, which was first titled SPECIES X, follows a cop who discovers that he is an alien and that there is a war going on between two species of extraterrestrials on Earth.

Ice Cube Gunning for 10 Graphic Novel Adaptation

Ice Cube's CubeVision is in talks to produce an adaptation of the graphic novel 10 for Dimension, VARIETY reports. Cube plans to produce with partner Matt Alvarez alongside Circle of Confusion's David Alpert and Rick Jacobs. The ARE WE THERE YET? star also hopes to play the lead. Gustin Nash and Jesse Cale adapted the script.

Pathe and the BBC have teamed on a new live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's classic THE JUNGLE BOOK, reports VARIETY. BBC documentary filmmaker John Downer (PRIDE) will helm the $50 million production, which will be based on a screenplay by Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle. 102 DALMATIANS producer Michelle Fox will produce for Downer's shingle.

Rush Hour 3 Beats Bourne

New Line's RUSH HOUR 3 (with vfx from ILM, Halon Ent. and Element FX, among others) debuted with a box office rush of $49.1M for the weekend period ended Aug. 12. Meanwhile, Universal's record breaking THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (with vfx from The Senate, Lip Sync Post and Snow Business) finished second with $32.8M after a 51% drop off, with a two-week cume of $131.5M. Fox's THE SIMPSONS MOVIE followed in third place with $11.2M, good enough for a $152.3M tally.

Stardust Director Takes On Thor

Marvel Studios has tapped STARDUST helmer Matthew Vaughn to direct the screen adaptation of THOR, reports VARIETY. Marvel hopes to beat out loaming strikes by starting production this winter. I AM LEGEND scribe Mark Protosevich penned the screenplay.

Fido Helmer to Fuel Space Invader

FIDO helmer Andrew Currie has been hired to direct Fox Atomic's comedy SPACE INVADER, starring Will Arnett, who will produce with Peter Principato and Paul Young, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Written by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger, the story follows the son of a NASA legend, who must overcome his fear of flying and join the space program when his girlfriend is picked to fly to the International Space Station with the hottest male astronaut around.

Voltron Transforms into Feature at Fox

Riding the popularity of the box office's favorite giant robots in TRANSFORMERS, 20th Century Fox-based New Regency is in final talks with the Mark Gordon Co. to bring VOLTRON: DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE to the big screen as a live-action film, VARIETY reports. Gordon has been developing the project and previously hired Justin Marks (HE-MAN) to pen the script.

Balls of Fury Hopes to get Earlier Bow Bounce

In response to both a preview screening and an in-person filmmakers' presentation at last month's Comic-Con International fan convention in San Diego, Rogue Pictures has pushed up the release date for comedy flick BALLS OF FURY. Previously set for Friday, Aug. 31, the movie will now open in the U.s. two days earlier, on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007.

The move to earlier in the week makes BALLS OF FURY the latest summer movie to maximize its commercial potential, a similar shift that other titles have recently made.

Alpha Dog's Yelchin To Play Star Trek's Chekov

Anton Yelchin (ALPHA DOG, HEARTS IN ATLANTIS) is in talks to play Russian navigator Pavel Checkov in the 11th STAR TREK feature, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. At Comic-Con producer/director J.J. Abrams officially announced that HEROES star Zachary Quinto, as well as Leonard Nimoy, will be playing Mr. Spock in the film.

The plot is on the QT, but it has been rumored that the story will follow a young Enterprise crew as they first leave the Starfleet Academy.

Kidman To Produce/Star in Colombian Horror Remake

Nicole Kidman is set to star in and produce Universal Picture's remake of Colombian horror film AL FINAL DEL ESPECTRO, reports VARIETY. The original film's director Juan Felipe Orozco is set to helm the redux, which is being adapted by Fernley Phillips (THE NUMBER 23).

Kidman, via her Blossom Films company, will produce alongside Vertigo Ent. heads Roy Lee and Doug Davison (THE INVASION) as well as Rick Schwartz (THE OTHERS).

Bourne Breaks August Records

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM not only broke records for the franchise and spy thrillers, but also for the month of August, posting an estimated opening weekend cume of $69.2 million, beating out former record holder RUSH HOUR 2 by $2.8 million. Last weekend's #1 film, THE SIMPSONS MOVIE, fell 65%, bringing in an estimated $25.1 million, which raises its cume to $128. 6 million for the weekend period ended Aug. 5, 2007. UNDERDOG debuted in third with approximately $12 million in box office receipts.

Roger Avary Enters Castle Wolfenstein

PULP FICTION co-writer Roger Avary has been tapped by producer Samuel Hadida to pen and direct an adaptation of ID Software's videogame, RETURN TO CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN, according to VARIETY.

Set during World War II, the plot of the game centers on a team of U.S. army rangers, lead by B.J. Blazkowicz, that are assigned the mission to infiltrate Castle Wolfenstein and gather information on the Nazis' SS Paranormal Division.
