POV Performs Stereoscopic Previs On Journey

In January 2006, POV Previs was contracted by Walden Media and New Line Cinema to construct previsualization for a new film being shot entirely in stereoscopic 3-D called JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. Loosely based on the Jules Vern classic, JOURNEY would embark on exploring a rich tapestry of story ideas using Real D Cinema technology. Although several CG films have been released utilizing Real D technology (CHICKEN LITTLE, MONSTER HOUSE, BEOWULF), JOURNEY remains the first live action film to use this shooting format.

Jim Belushi Cast As Lion In Animated Oz

Jim Belushi will play the role of the Lion in Alpine Pictures' upcoming DOROTHY OF OZ.

DOROTHY OF OZ is the first in a slated series of animated feature films by Alpine Pictures, in association with Box Office Productions III, based on the writings of children's author Roger S. Baum. Baum's work continues the legacy began by his great-grandfather L. Frank Baum, author of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ.

Belushi has voiced characters on movies and TV shows such as HOODWINKED, THE WILD, RUGRATS, SNOW BUDDIES, and THE ADVENTURES OF JIMMY NEUTRON: BOY GENIUS.

Family Guy Showrunner Gets Last Blood

David A. Goodman, showrunner and exec producer on FAMILY GUY, will write LAST BLOOD, a feature film from Benderspink from the Blatant Comics horror property, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

The comic, created by Bobby Crosby and Chris Crosby, is about a group of human survivors who escaped a zombie massacre, who are protected by a group of vampires who need their blood to survive.

MK12 Works On Quantum Title Sequence

Kansas City, Kansas-based MK12 is currently working on the main title sequence for the next James Bond film, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, directed by Marc Forster and starring Daniel Craig. Producers are Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

The studio just wrapped a four-day shoot at Pinewood Studios, directed by Simon Chaudoir. MK12 is also in charge of developing, designing and animating the graphical interfaces throughout the film.

Dark Knight Beats Up Step Brothers, Scully And Mulder

Warner Bros.' THE DARK KNIGHT won its second week in release with $75.166 million (actuals), grossing $314.781M in two weeks and setting several box office records (for the weekend ending July 27).

The critically acclaimed box office smash's vfx were by Double Negative, BUF, Gentle Giant Studios and New Deal Studios.

Robocop Back To Fight Crime In 2010

MGM has signed Darren Aronofsky to direct and David Self to write a new installment for its ROBOCOP franchise. Aronofsky, the director of THE FOUNTAIN, and Self, the writer of ROAD TO PERDITION, will get ROBOCOP into theaters in 2010.

Phoenix Pictures' Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce ROBOCOP. Cale Boyter, Exec VP Production at MGM will oversee the project for the studio.

Gears Of War Shifts To Legendary, WB

GEARS OF WAR, set up at New Line since early 2007, is being financed by Legendary Pictures at Warner Bros., per VARIETY.

The videogame from Epic Games and Microsoft will be turned into a motion picture directed by Len Wiseman and written by Chris Morgan (first draft by Stuart Beattie). New Line had pegged it for a summer 2009 release, but WB has not yet dated it.

Headlight Reinterprets A Classic With Wolfie

From New York-based Design + VFX house Headlight comes WOLFIE, an inventive interpretation of the classic THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF fable. This animated two-minute short was stylishly crafted for the second annual Twenty 120 film collection. The 2008 Twenty120 collection features works from renowned commercial directors, designers, television creatives, art directors and fine artists; spanning from Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, London and Cologne, Germany. This year's theme: "Truth vs. Deception."

Alice Found Not In Wonderland, But In Australia

Director Tim Burton has found his Alice for a big-budget ALICE IN WONDERLAND pic from Disney, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is in final negotiations to star as the title character in Burton's take on the Lewis Carroll fantasy novel, ending a long search.

Linda Woolverton (THE LION KING) penned the script for the film, produced by longtime Burton collaborator Richard Zanuck, former Disney chair Joe Roth and Jennifer and Suzanne Todd.

New Release Date For Fly Me To The Moon

The U.S. release date of FLY ME TO THE MOON, the first animated film shot in 3-D for 3-D, has been changed to August 15.

In this groundbreaking 3-D animated adventure from Summit Ent., three young flies set off on a courageous mission to become the first insects on the moon by hitching a ride on the historic Apollo 11 space flight.

Based on the actual transcripts and the original blueprints from NASA, the film's visuals and attention to detail introduce a whole new generation to the achievements of the space program's most momentous mission.

The Dark Knight Shatters IMAX Opening Box Office Records

Warner Bros.' THE DARK KNIGHT, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, and directed by Christopher Nolan, shattered opening box office records on 94 IMAX screens during its debut. The IMAX release contributed $6.3 million of the $158.4 million that the film grossed at the domestic box office, on a total of 94 North American screens this weekend.

RealD And Cineplex Deal Brings Record Number Of 3-D Movie Screens

Cineplex Ent. and RealD have signed a long-term agreement to install a minimum of 175 3-D systems into Cineplex Entertainment theatres across the country by December 2009, bringing RealD's committed screen count to well over 5,500.

The commencement of the RealD rollout is dependent upon Cineplex Entertainment entering into a digital deployment agreement to begin the conversion to digital projection.

To Save Gotham, Dark Knight Beats Pirates, Spider-Man

Winning the weekend and becoming the new all-time opening weekend box office champ, Warner Bros.' THE DARK KNIGHT earned $158.4 million (actuals) for the weekend ending July 20. That easily beats the $151.1M opening of SPIDER-MAN 3 last May and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST opening in July 2007 with $135.6M.

In addition, the domestic box office racked up more than $260M in ticket sales, making it the biggest three-day weekend ever in total grosses, per VARIETY.

Dark Knight Lights Up Midnight Showings

THE DARK KNIGHT's 12:01 a.m. screenings Thursday night broke a box office record, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Warner Bros. reported Friday that the late night/early morning screenings earned a record $18.5 million, $640,000 of that coming from IMAX screenings.

And, that $18.5M doesn't count the 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. showings that some theaters booked, only the 3,040 theaters screening at midnight.

John Woo Gets Comic-Con Caliber Gun

John Woo will direct CALIBER, a big screen adaptation of Radical Comics series, per VARIETY. The official announcement will be at Comic-Con in San Diego next week.

The film will likely be co-financed by Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil, Barry Levine at Radical Comics and Lion Rock, the U.S.-based shingle Woo runs with longtime partner Terence Chang.

FrameCycler Anchors VFX Pipeline For Journey To The Center Of The Earth

FrameCycler, with IRIDAS' DualStream stereoscopic technology, played a key role in the vfx pipeline for JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. With the additional demands which stereo filmmaking places on visual effects work, effective review and image analysis tools are essential. Christopher Townsend, vfx supervisor on JOURNEY, and artists from several of the facilities involved, spoke recently about the project and FrameCycler's role in the pipeline.

Marvel Nearing Deal For Iron Man 2 Scribe

Marvel is reportedly close to a deal with writer Justin Theroux to pen the sequel to IRON MAN, per VARIETY.

The comic's film division is also close to a deal to bring back director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey, Jr. for a film it has already announced it will release in April 2010.

Theroux is an actor-writer, best known for roles in CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE, HBO's SIX FEET UNDER and miniseries JOHN ADAMS. He recently wrote DreamWorks comedy TROPIC THUNDER, arriving from Paramount in August.

Framestore Is A Dancing Queen For Mamma Mia

MAMMA MIA! is a joint British and American film adaptation of the long running West End musical of the same name, based around the enduring pop songs of ABBA. Starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, the film was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman. The Littlestar Productions and Playtone release opened in the U.K. on July 10 2008 and opens in the U.S. on July 18. Digital vfx for the film were created by Framestore.

3-D Accounts For More Than Half Of Journey's Opening Take

RealD 3D, the world's leading 3-D experience, brought in 55 percent of the total box office for Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, which earned an estimated $21.02 million in its opening weekend.

Cloudy, Chance Of Meatballs For January 2010

Sony Pictures has confirmed that its first stereoscopic digital 3-D animated release CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS will come out on January 15, 2010.

Sony Pictures Animation most recently released 2007's SURF's UP and the 2006 release of OPEN SEASON, which included 3-D IMAX screenings.

“Food falling from the sky lends itself so well to 3-D," said Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment's Digital Production division.

CLOUDY has the same 3-D pipeline team used for BEOWULF, MONSTER HOUSE, OPEN SEASON and THE POLAR EXPRESS.

Capcom's Lost Planet Found By WB

Warner Bros. and Capcom will develop a feature film based on hit video game LOST PLANET from the Japanese publisher, according to VARIETY.

Capcom will co-finance the project, which will be written by David Hayter, who most recently penned Zack Snyder's WATCHMEN for WB.

Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul will produce via Seaside Ent., their fantasy-fare shingle.

Released in Japan in 2006 and North America in early 2007, LOST PLANET has sold more than 2 million units, and a sequel is expected.

Hellboy Recruits A Golden Army To Win Box Office

Universal's HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY won its opening weekend (ending July 13) with $34.54 million (actuals). The Guillermo del Toro-directed comic book adaptation had vfx by Double Negative, FB-FX, Filmefex Studio, Ghost ApS, Hatch Production, Lip Synch Post and The Senate Visual Effects.

HANCOCK, last week's winner, dropped to the number two slot with $32.08M and a two-week $164.42M gross. The Sony film's vfx were by Furious FX, Lidar Services, Sony Pictures Imageworks and X1fx.
