Los Angeles Film Festival 2009

Begins: June 18, 2009

The Los Angeles Film Festival, held annually for ten days in June, showcases the best of American and international cinema. Drawing on an expected attendance of 85,000, the festival provides films with the opportunity to be embraced by the public and discovered by the industry. More than 100 feature films -- narrative and documentary-are featured in the festival, alongside gala premieres, panels and seminars, short film programs, music video showcases, free outdoor screenings, live musical performances, and unique signature events.

Academy Pays Tribute to Godfather of Special Makeup Effects Dick Smith

Begins: June 17, 2009

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present "A Tribute to Dick Smith: The Godfather of Special Makeup Effects," on Wednesday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Six-time Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker will host the evening, which will be attended by Smith himself and will feature a panel discussion including writer-director Guillermo del Toro, actor Hal Holbrook and makeup artists Greg Cannom, Kazuhiro Tsuji and Andrew Clement, among others.

Gunga Din Roars into Action in LA and NYC

Begins: June 12, 2009

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a special screening of the 1939 action-adventure film GUNGA DIN on Friday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Before the presentation, Oscar winners Ben Burtt and Craig Barron will discuss the sound and visual effects used in the film. The program also will be presented in New York on Monday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy Theater in New York City.

VFX of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian Plus Screening

The Los Angeles Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH will host a one night only event, sponsored by Side Effects software on the making of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN. Francisco Rodriguez, FX Supervisor at Rhythm & Hues will provide an overview of the visual effects techniques employed across the production pipeline integrating both propriety tools and Houdini. There will be a special emphasis showcasing the creation of the climatic "Netherworld Sequence."

Hollywood & the Art of Puppetry

Do you like movies with creepy creature special effects? Meet Hollywood puppetry and special effects master Greg Aronowitz (THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK; LABOU) and go behind the scenes of Hollywood puppetry and animatronics.

Using examples from his "Best of Fest" Award-winning film LABOU, director Greg Aronowitz and producer Sheri Bryant share the magic of creature creation by bringing a puppet character to life. This hands-on workshop will give 30 lucky kids the chance to see puppetry and animatronics in action, then ask questions and create their own Labou puppets!

Academy to Celebrate "Hollywood's Greatest Year" All Summer Long

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will kick off summer screening series, "Hollywood's Greatest Year: The Best Picture Nominees of 1939," on Monday, May 18, with a big-screen presentation of GONE WITH THE WIND. The 10-film 70th anniversary celebration, which will run through August 3, showcases all of the Best Picture nominees from a landmark year that saw the release of an exceptional number of outstanding films. All screenings will be held on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Design Festa Vol. 29

Design Festa is a biannual international art event, started in 1994. It is open to all artists from all over the world to exhibit their creative talent freely. 7,000 artists working in a variety of mediums will be present, turning the two day event into artistic chaos. Star Trek: The Exhibition in Pennsylvania
