Side Effects Training: Houdini with Jeff Wagner

This 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. training session is a lecture presentation where various visual effects solvers will be demonstrated. This will include rigid body dynamics and particles. During the second half of the class building digital assets and Houdini's lighting tools will be covered. There will also be a discussion on rendering and shader building.

Participants should be familiar with Houdini 9, and should have some familiarity with RBDs and POPs. This workshop is for the TD or Artist focused on visual effects in production.

Pixar's Vickery to Light Up London and Liverpool

Games industry educational provider TwelveJ announced Pixar Artist Jeremy Vickery as guest lecturer for its next event entitled "Digital Lighting & Practical Colour."

Jeremy Vickery worked at Pixar on films including THE INCREDIBLES, CARS, RATATOUILLE and WALL-E. Vickery will share some of the secrets, techniques and experiences from over a decade spent in creating 3D modeling textures and lighting, film effects, matte painting and concept art.

The event will also feature speakers from Geomerics discussing how Vickery's ideas can be practically implemented in games.

The Art Directors Guild (ADG) and the University Art Museum (UAM) of California State University, Long Beach will host an innovative two-day conference called 5D - The Future of Immersive Design. It will be the first-ever conference dealing with the convergence of visual storytelling and design technology across all narrative media and will take place October 4-5. 5D will explore the new role of design in these five dimensions, thus the name 5D: Film, TV, Animation, Interactive, and Environment. The venue for the conference will be the Carpenter Performing Arts Center at CSU, Long Beach.

eDIT 11 Filmmaker's Festival

The closing event of this year's eDIT 11 Filmmaker's Festival is a screening of Disney-Pixar's WALL-E. The screening, sponsored by BVI/Germany, will be on September 30 at 7 p.m. at the festival.

On Monday, September 29, WALL-E editor Stephen Schaffer will talk about editing for animated films and Director of Editorial and Post Production for Pixar Animation Studios, Bill Kinder will discuss postproduction in animation.
