Jan Svankmajer Retrospective

Begins: June 15, 2001

Invoking the universes of Edgar Alan Poe, Lewis Carroll and the claustrophobia of Kafka, the work of Czech filmmaker Jan Svankmajer is bizarrely beautiful: a witty blend of the macabre, the grotesque and gothic horror! The series opens with the LA premiere of his newest film GREEDY GUTS (OSTESANEK, 2001). Svankmajer's features ALICE and PLEASURE CONSPIRATORS will screen along with several programs of his short films, plus the Brothers Quay's THE CABINET OF JAN SVANKMAJER (14 min.).

Northeast Supercon is one of the country's foremost comic book, sci-fi/fantasy, toy and collectible conventions. The event features celebrity guests, a charity auction, sci-fi trivia contests, acting and modeling auditions, a costume contest and much more. For role game players, the conventions will offer various tournaments, including Magic the Gathering, Star Trek, Star Wars & other CCG & RPG games. Sakura Con 2001 is a Japanese anime and manga convention. Voice-over actress Lia Sargent will be the guest of honor. Lia has provided voices for shows such as TRIGUN, COWBOY BEBOP, EL-HAZARD and many others. Nick Park Tribute At The Los Angeles Museum of Television and Radio

The Los Angeles Museum of Television and Radio presents a 90-minute film on Nick Park, the creator of the popular stop-motion animation characters Wallace and Gromit. The film will feature sequences from CREATURE COMFORT, and all three of the Wallace & Gromit shorts. A GRAND DAY OUT has Wallace and Gromit traveling to the moon in search of cheese. THE WRONG TROUSERS chronicles the mishaps that ensue when Wallace takes in a shifty penguin as a lodger. A CLOSE SHAVE uncovers how Wallace and Gromit unravel a countrywide sheep-rustling ring.
